A Japanese company is opening its first U.S. store and is seeking a Store Manager. The store is based on a business model operating in Japan: a permanent, farmers-market-style space where farmers and producers rent selling space and sell vegetables and other products directly to consumers. This is a rare opportunity to help launch a new business in the U.S. from the ground up.
Location: Ventura or Oxnard, California (store opening planned for May-June 2027)
Employment Type: Full-time, Exempt (salary will be at or above the California exempt threshold)
Salary: $70,000 - $80,000 per year
Benefits: Under consideration; standard U.S. level benefits planned
Hiring Timeline: January - February 2027
Interviews: Online interviews first. The hiring manager plans to visit the U.S. around January 2027 and would like to meet several candidates in person.
Work Schedule:
- The store is open every day.
- The Store Manager will also hire and manage local staff, so the manager can decide their own work days and days off based on staff schedules and store operations. There is no required day of the week.
Responsibilities:
- Develop new relationships with farmers and producers who will sell at the store, build relationships, and negotiate
- Communicate and coordinate with farmers and producers
- Recruit, train, and manage local staff
- Take part in the store launch and handle general store operations
- Product display is mainly handled by local staff and producers, so the role involves little daily physical work; the focus is relationship building with producers, staff management, and overall store operations
Qualifications / Ideal Candidate:
- No industry, store management, or work experience required; inexperienced candidates are welcome
- Strong communication skills; able to build good relationships with farmers, producers, local staff, and others from diverse backgrounds
- Willing to learn new things and flexible; the job is relatively easy to learn, so attitude matters more than specialized knowledge
- Experience in interpersonal work or negotiation is a plus (not required)
- Motivated by building a new U.S. business from scratch
- Candidates from a wide range of career backgrounds will be considered
Language / PC Skills:
- Japanese ability sufficient for business communication with the Japan side is required
- English sufficient to communicate smoothly with local staff and farmers/producers (advanced business English is not required)
- Basic PC skills (sending and receiving email) are sufficient
Other:
- A driver's license and driving are required for the job
- No regular business travel; one trip to Japan may be requested before the opening to learn about the business
- Relocation support may be considered for strongly motivated, well-suited candidates living outside the work location (to be discussed individually)
