Job description

Teacher Aide KeenLogic is seeking a Teacher’s Aide to join our team at the House of Representatives Childcare Center on Capitol Hill.

The purpose of the House Childcare Center (HRCCC) is to provide full-day, year-round quality childcare for children of the Members of the House of Representatives, their staff, and House support personnel.

The Teacher Aide supports the Lead Teacher in providing a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for children at the House of Representatives Childcare Center (HRCCC).

This role plays a critical part in maintaining classroom structure, supporting daily routines, and ensuring the physical, emotional, and educational needs of each child are met.

The ideal candidate is dependable, attentive, and passionate about early childhood education, with the ability to work collaboratively in a professional, team-oriented environment.

This position provides staffing support for both planned extended leave (such as parental or medical leave) and short-term, on-call coverage needs.

Assignments may be full-time (40 hours per week, Monday–Friday) for defined periods, or short-term based on operational needs.

Shifts are scheduled within operating hours (8:

  • 00 AM – 6:30 PM) and consist of 8 working hours with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break.
  • Some roles may require availability on short notice.
  • Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent Six months minimum experience working with children and families from diverse backgrounds, preferably infants, toddlers, and preschool aged Experience in planning and/or implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum and assessments Experience working independently and as a part of a team Hold current CPR and First Aid certifications (or be able to obtain prior to start) Certification must include in person/hand-on skills portion; online only certifications will not be accepted Be able to secure and maintain Federal Government security checks as deemed appropriate Job Expectations Ability to support the day-to-day delivery of childcare services.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective and professional communication skills, both orally and in writing, maintains confidentiality.
  • Ability to proactively observe emerging needs and willingness to take initiative without directives.
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical activities such as bending, stooping, kneeling, walking, pushing, and pulling throughout an 8-hour shift.
  • Ability to maintain consistent and reliable attendance required.
  • Flexibility with scheduling as needed.
  • Description of Work Provides active, alert, engaged supervision of children.
  • Maintains accountability and adheres to prescribed child to staff ratios.
  • Brings to Lead Teacher and Directors’ attention any relevant information or issues concerning or related to staff, children, and/or families.
  • Provides care for children including changing diapers/toileting, feeding, and comforting; ensures all children’s physical, cognitive, and emotional needs are met.
  • Prioritizes health and safety; conducts daily child health and safety checks; monitors and responds appropriately to illness, injury, and other emergency situations.
  • Maintains awareness of all special health and dietary needs.
  • Follows cleaning and sanitation guidelines and utilizes universal precautions.
  • Participates in developmentally appropriate, child-centered curriculum and associated assessment planning, implementation, and documentation.
  • Monitors child learning and development and proactively provides on curriculum and assessment to classroom teacher(s).
  • Assists classroom teacher(s) and other staff with fostering a positive learning environment for assigned classroom(s).
  • Utilizes developmentally and situationally appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Develops familiarity and maintains compliance with all applicable legal requirements including House, Committee, CAO, and House Child Care Canter rules, practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Treats all children, families, and staff with dignity and respect, allowing for individual differences.
  • Establishes positive relationships with each child, family member, and coworker.
  • Remains calm in challenging situations.
  • Contributes to the classroom, House Child Care Center, and CAO team; shows initiative towards the improvement of provided services by sharing ideas and participating in meetings.
  • Accurately completes classroom logs, child records, and other classroom documentation in a timely manner as assigned.
  • Maintains accurate records and logs in a timely and organized fashion and ensures that data confidentiality is maintained.
  • Uses materials and resources effectively; informs administration of unusual problems and unanticipated constraints of resource requirements in a timely manner.
  • Monitors usage and inventory levels of all supplies and materials and advises administrators of related needs and issues.
  • Returns relevant items to designated storage areas and maintains organization throughout the classroom and Center.
  • Promotes awareness of healthy practices (e.g., eating habits, nutritional content, exercise) as appropriate.
  • Supports children and families through transitions including enrollment and withdrawal, between classrooms, to and from home each day, and between activities throughout the day.
  • Participates in special limited term and long-term projects and initiatives; participates in after action reviews and provides feedback as appropriate.
  • Seeks and attends ongoing professional development and demonstrates an attitude of continual growth.
