Department Summary

About the UNT Honors College
The Honors College helps approximately 2,000 undergraduate students get the most out of their UNT experience by providing in-class and extracurricular activities that are broader, deeper, or more complex than the norm. Honors College members may take Honors courses, engage in undergraduate research, participate in Honors College programming, live in Honors College housing, and enjoy other membership benefits.
The goal of the Honors College is to help these students build an excellent foundation that prepares them for studying at the graduate level and establishing a fulfilling career.

Position Overview

The Student & Program Specialist is an integral part of the Honors College Student Life team. This position has primary advisor responsibilities for the Honors College Programming Council (HCPC), the student-led programming initiative of the Honors College. HCPC is made up of 30+ students who host 25+ events each semester. This position will support communication initiatives for the Honors College, including social media and newsletter management, and support student workers’ skill growth in these areas. This position coordinates several Student Life programs and will provide logistical support for all Student Life initiatives.
This position also provides student support in other areas of the Honors College, such as academics and recruitment, as needed. Proper use of university credit card for student activities and staff events will be required. Driving students in university vehicles for various events is likely.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree and two years of office administration experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Demonstrated ability to provide outstanding customer service. Demonstrated skill in verbal and written communications. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to handle multiple priorities. Strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors Degree required; any amount of experience working with students in a higher education setting.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Job Duties

  • Serve as an advisor for the Honors College Programming Council; meet regularly with program chairs to support program development; maintain occasional after-hours availability (ex. calls, Teams chats, emails, etc.) to support student leaders as they navigate event challenges.
  • Coordinate Honors College Programming Council annual leader recruitment and selection processes, including advertising for applications, leading interview processes, and communicating selections; assess member performance and coach underperforming student leaders to enhance learning & development goals.
  • Function as the primary purchaser and shopper for the Honors College Programming Council and staff programming efforts, and be responsible for all steps of the Purchasing Card process.
  • Coordinate Honors College Programming Council data analysis and reporting efforts; train student leaders to utilize data toward data-informed decision-making and program improvement.
  • Maintain a service mentality in all professional contacts and demonstrate an upbeat, courteous, and cooperative attitude; establish and maintain positive rapport with students; invite students to Sage Hall for events, join them in other initiatives across campus, and host Honors College programs.
  • Monitor student submissions for the Community Impact Recognition award and compile monthly and annual engagement data.
  • Support Honors College social media initiatives and follower interactions; support student workers and coach their social media content creation and skill development.
  • Contribute to Honors College internal communication initiatives, including requesting content submissions, editing submissions, and distributing through Honors College communication platforms. - (Essential)
  • Coordinate Honors College signature annual programs, including Fall Sweet Sweet Welcome and other annual events.
  • Lead planning for Fall Common Book Experience events to be held at the beginning of the Fall semester.
  • Support the annual Honors College Pre-Flight Program and First Flight programs; lead portions of Pre-Flight and First Flight planning and day-of execution, as assigned.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Director for Student Life to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders; communicate with faculty and staff about various Honors College Student Life programs and initiatives.
  • Represent the Honors College in a positive, professional manner on campus and in the community.
  • Represent the Honors College during occasional presentations to prospective and incoming Honors College students.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities; continue to further educational needs. Share insights gained from classes or conferences with other staff and Honors College students.
  • Facilitate student recruitment and interview processes for Global Scholars Program Year 2 cohorts; lead programming for GSPY2 each spring semester and support the GSPY2 study abroad initiative.
