Job description

Health Room And Student Support Assistant

In Washougal, we work together to develop responsible, collaborative, continuous learners who are prepared to make a positive impact. The Health Room and Student Support Assistant will work in partnership with the principal, nurse(s), counselor(s) and teacher(s). This position will provide health services and behavioral interventions for students.

The Health Room and Student Support Assistant will be supervised by the Building Administrator.

Essential Duties

This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

  • Records observations and incidents relating to specific students for the purpose of documentation and/or communicating information to appropriate personnel
  • Enters discipline data into appropriate databases (e.g. school wide information system) and works with staff to identify trend areas in discipline
  • Consults with students to problem solve issues that are a barrier to their success
  • Maintain student school health records
  • Serves as a Parent Directed Adult (PDA)
  • Provide health care support for students and staff communication as it relates to student injuries or illnesses and primary contact with families regarding injury and illness (e.g. explain documents, requirements, and answers procedural inquiries)
  • Maintain and retrieve a variety of health files, logs, and other records/documents (computer and hard copy including confidential files) to ensure accurate, up-to-date information and supplies are available
  • Maintain inventory of health room supplies and status check to ensure operating correctly (e.g. batteries) and work with secretaries to order new supplies
  • Monthly AED status check for each unit
  • Administer medication and implement health care plans as directed by the school nurse
  • Consults with the school nurse regarding communicable diseases and responds accordingly
  • Generate reports and other required information
  • Attend meetings and trainings as directed
  • Assist with the organization of health screenings in the building
  • Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings for the purpose of enforcing school rules and procedures and/or providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Promotes good habits for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcome and encouraging student development.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff (e.g. administrators, psychologists, teachers, etc.) for the purpose of information
  • Builds positive relationships with students, staff and families
  • Supports implementation of Multi-tiered Systems of Support through the implementation of behavior management plans and monitors and maintains the plans with identified students.(MTSS) (e.g. check-in/check-out)
  • Communicates and coordinates with office, building leadership, teachers and staff

Required Skills

  • Ability and willingness to perform delegated medical tasks as instructed and delegated by RN/LPN such as catheterization, tube feeding, blood glucose and insulin monitoring, etc.
  • Ability to integrate medical, behavioral, and student/staff crisis interventions
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Knowledge and application of FERPA and HIPPA laws regarding medical information and confidentiality, laws pertaining to the administration of oral medication, communicable diseases, immunizations, district health services policies and procedures, etc.
  • Skills in keyboarding using computers and touchscreen devices
  • Skills in written and oral communications and familiarity with medical terminology
  • Skills in handling confidential matters
  • Skills in utilizing district-adopted software
  • Skills in learning and interpreting assignments, procedures, rules, and regulations

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats and/or present information to others; and understand complex multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: concepts of grammar and punctuation; direct instruction/reading instruction; stages of child development and learning styles; and age appropriate activities.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with constant interruptions.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. There is some opportunity to affect the Organization's services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; frequent stopping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking and 25% standing. The job is performed under some hazardous conditions including exposure/contact with bodily fluids.

Experience: Job related experience is desired. Education: High School diploma with 2.5 GPA and AA Degree or Relevant Work Experience
