Tentative Recruitment Schedule: Application Deadline: August 5, 2026 Written Examination: August 14, 2026

Under general direction, the incumbent will perform complex and highly responsible clerical work required in the maintenance of fiscal and statistical records. Tasks may include processing purchase requisitions and invoices, monthly reconciliation of County purchasing card transactions, monthly reconciliation of vendor statements to invoices, processing journal entries, preparing complex calculations for cost allocation purposes, cost accounting functions, auditing payroll, assisting human resources, use of various software including Cost Accounting Management System, PeopleSoft, Microsoft Access Database, Oracle Cloud modules, and other related work as assigned.

The ideal candidate for the Accounting Technician position is a detail-oriented and analytical professional with a solid understanding of accounting principles and a commitment to accuracy. They have experience maintaining journals, ledgers, and financial records, as well as preparing comprehensive reports on revenues and expenditures.

This individual excels at compiling and analyzing complex data, reconciling accounts, and processing financial transactions such as accounts payable and payroll. They are proficient in computerized accounting systems, spreadsheets, and word processing applications, and demonstrate the ability to streamline processes using both manual and automated procedures.

Typical tasks include maintaining journals and ledgers of financial transactions and preparing analytical reports on revenues and expenditures; preparing calculations for billing of services provided by the County; maintaining general, statistical, and cost records; preparing and processing information which requires the analysis of complex source documents; compiling a variety of narrative and statistical reports, locating sources of information; answering questions that involve searching for and abstracting data; coordinating statistical input for electronic data processing; reconciling credit cards; processing accounts payable; reviewing facility work orders for accuracy and assigning service request numbers for routinely provided services; auditing payroll timekeeping entries to ensure completeness and accuracy; obtaining payroll supporting documentation; and providing assistance with human resource tasks.

Minimum qualifications include knowledge of the principles of basic accounting, supervising methods and techniques, record keeping techniques, statistical concepts and techniques, and computerized accounting spreadsheet, charting, and word processing applications. Skills/abilities include performing fiscal and statistical record keeping at the journey level, analyzing data and presenting logical conclusions, developing and maintaining record keeping systems, and minimizing workload through efficient use of automated and manual procedures.

Education/experience patterns include three (3) years of full-time general clerical experience involving: bookkeeping, statistical or financial record keeping, payroll or related duties. Two (2) years of which must have been at a journey-level. Or two (2) years of full-time journey-level clerical experience involving: bookkeeping, statistical or financial record-keeping, payroll or related duties; AND one (1) year of full-time schooling in relevant college course work or business school training (24 semester units or 36 quarter units). Proof of education is required for verification purposes at the time of application. Examination process: Most County recruitments consist of the steps detailed below and are governed by Merit Principles. The examination process ensures that all applicants are given the same opportunity to gain employment within Stanislaus County.

  • Application Review and Screening . Applications are carefully screened based on information provided. Those who submit incomplete applications that lack relevant qualifications or do not submit all required documents will not be invited to move on.
  • Written Examination . Applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam that tests knowledge for the position.
  • Oral Examination . Applicants are invited to a panel interview in which they will be evaluated by County subject matter experts.
  • Eligible Lists . Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on an eligible list for that classification. Eligible lists are effective for six months but may be extended up to eighteen months.

General information: Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Office Worker/Clerical Bargaining Unit for labor relations purposes. Note: The eligible list generated from this recruitment may be used to fill future extra-help, part-time and full-time vacancies throughout Stanislaus County.
