Job description

Structural Project Manager

Layton Construction is seeking an experienced Structural Project Manager with proven high-rise construction experience to lead the planning, coordination, and execution of complex structural scopes on large-scale vertical construction projects.

The Structural Project Manager will be responsible for the overall management of structural construction activities, with particular emphasis on concrete, reinforcing steel, post-tensioning, structural steel, vertical sequencing, schedule, cost, quality, and trade partner coordination.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience successfully managing structural scopes on high-rise buildings and understands the unique challenges associated with vertical construction, including structural sequencing, floor-cycle planning, crane and material logistics, temporary works, embeds, MEP coordination, and maintaining schedule performance through the structural phase.

This position partners closely with the Project Superintendent, design team, ownership, subcontractors, and internal project team to deliver predictable outcomes while maximizing project profitability and maintaining Layton's standards for safety, quality, and client service. This position will report to an on-site Senior Project Manager.

Duties

  • Champions "The Layton Way" by delivering predictable outcomes for internal teams, external teams, and customers.
  • Ensures that "Constructing with Integrity" is delivered by working with honesty, unity, safety, and quality of work.
  • Works collaboratively within Layton's "Two in the Box" approach, partnering closely with the Superintendent to ensure successful project delivery and strengthen client relationships.
  • Provides leadership and overall management of structural construction scopes on complex high-rise and vertical construction projects.
  • Manages structural packages including cast-in-place concrete, reinforcing steel, post-tensioning, structural steel, embeds, miscellaneous metals, and related structural systems.
  • Develops and manages structural sequencing and floor-cycle strategies in partnership with the Superintendent and trade partners to maintain critical project milestones.
  • Coordinates structural activities with architectural, faade, vertical transportation, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other building systems to identify and resolve conflicts before they impact field production.
  • Assists in the preparation of project estimates and develops and manages project budgets for assigned scopes.
  • Manages procurement, negotiation, and administration of structural subcontractor and supplier agreements.
  • Manages project schedule updates and key structural milestones in partnership with the Project Superintendent, including foundation activities, vertical structure, floor-cycle durations, topping out, dry-in, and turnover milestones.
  • Evaluates structural drawings, specifications, shop drawings, RFIs, submittals, and coordination documents for completeness, constructability, and consistency.
  • Works closely with design teams and trade partners to resolve structural design conflicts, field conditions, embeds, penetrations, tolerances, and sequencing issues.
  • Manages structural materials and equipment procurement in alignment with the project budget and overall construction schedule.
  • Monitors project performance for quantity, cost, safety, quality, productivity, and schedule in partnership with the Superintendent.
  • Develops and monitors project quality, safety, and risk management plans with particular attention to structural construction activities.
  • Tracks structural production and proactively identifies potential schedule impacts, manpower concerns, procurement constraints, and trade coordination issues.
  • Negotiates owner and subcontractor change orders and manages resulting cost, schedule, and profit impacts.
  • Develops monthly client pay requests and follows up on collection.
  • Controls payment of job costs based on document review and approval and coordinates with project accounting regarding payments, lien releases, forecasting, and monthly project reviews.
  • Maintains strong working relationships with owners, architects, structural engineers, consultants, subcontractors, and trade partners.
  • Leads structural scope meetings and communicates project status, risks, schedule impacts, and required decisions to project stakeholders.
  • Supports final closeout procedures including as-built drawings, structural documentation, punch list completion, substantial completion, and turnover.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant construction experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years of commercial construction project management experience, with demonstrated experience managing structural scopes on high-rise construction projects.
  • High-rise construction experience is required. Candidates should have direct experience managing the structural phase of multi-story vertical construction projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of cast-in-place concrete, reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete, structural steel, foundations, vertical structural systems, and high-rise construction sequencing.
  • Understands estimating concepts sufficiently to verify bids, evaluate scope coverage, understand market rates, forecast costs, and manage change orders.
  • Strong understanding of construction contracts and ability to identify and manage contractual, financial, and schedule risk.
  • Working knowledge of applicable building codes, structural requirements, construction laws, and industry practices.

The full salary range for this position is $130,000 to $170,000. This position is eligible for a target bonus.
