Position Overview
Stand-By Personnel is seeking an experienced Structural Fitter to join a busy steel fabrication team. This position is responsible for laying out, positioning, aligning, and fitting structural steel components according to blueprints, shop drawings, and fabrication specifications.
The ideal candidate has previous structural fitting or steel fabrication experience, strong blueprint reading skills, and the mechanical aptitude necessary to accurately prepare assemblies for welding.
Required Experience & Skills
• Previous structural fitting or steel fabrication experience preferred
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and technical specifications
• Strong structural layout and fit-up skills
• Ability to accurately use tape measures and other measuring equipment
• Experience using hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment
• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities
• Excellent attention to detail and dimensional accuracy
• Ability to work independently and as part of a fabrication team
• Reliable attendance and strong work ethic
• Strong commitment to workplace safety
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
• Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and fabrication specifications
• Lay out structural steel components according to required dimensions
• Position, align, and fit structural components in preparation for welding
• Measure, mark, and inspect materials throughout the fabrication process
• Verify dimensions, angles, alignment, and fit-up accuracy
• Identify and correct fit-up or dimensional issues before welding
• Use hand tools, power tools, grinders, and measuring equipment safely and efficiently
• Prepare materials and assemblies for Welders and other fabrication personnel
• Inspect completed fit-ups to ensure specifications and quality requirements are met
• Work closely with Welders and fabrication personnel to maintain production flow
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
• Follow all company safety procedures and fabrication requirements
• Perform additional structural fitting and fabrication duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
• Structural steel fabrication experience
• Advanced blueprint and shop drawing interpretation skills
• Experience fitting beams, frames, structural assemblies, or similar components
• Layout and fabrication experience
• Experience using grinders and other metal fabrication tools
• Welding or tack-welding experience
• Previous experience in a high-production fabrication shop
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand for extended periods throughout the shift
• Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, carrying, and repetitive physical activity
• Ability to safely handle structural components and fabrication materials
• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment while wearing required PPE
• Comfortable performing physically demanding work in an industrial fabrication environment
Work Environment
• Industrial structural steel and fabrication environment
• Hands-on work involving steel components, fabrication tools, measuring equipment, and welding operations
• Fast-paced production setting focused on dimensional accuracy, quality, safety, and productivity
• Regular collaboration with Welders and other fabrication personnel
• Overtime opportunities may be available based on production needs
