Job Location Raleigh, NC Department Dept. of Population, Health & Pathobiology About the Department The Department of Population Health and Pathobiology trains doctors of veterinary medicine who will specialize in understanding and reducing disease in animal populations, particularly food animals.
Disease in these populations poses serious risks to food safety, has economic implications, and, in cases where the disease is communicable to humans, is a significant public health hazard.
Our faculty are recognized experts in the fields of epidemiology and public health, microbiology and immunology, parasitology, pathology, poultry, ruminant, and swine health management, as will as pharmacology and risk assessment.
Our goals are to advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, and by mentoring and inspiring students, providing world-class clinical and diagnostic services, and offering the public the latest knowledge through innovative extension and engagement activities.
Essential Job Duties The specific purpose of this position is to provide technical and organizational support for courses associated with the Teaching Animal Unit, particularly for ruminant, swine, and poultry species.
The technician will assist course coordinators with the following organizational tasks :
- Assisting course coordinators with updating and itemizing course budgets, applying knowledge of basic accounting to monitor budgets and problem-solve budgetary constraints and issues.
- Maintaining supply and equipment inventories for instructional purposes
- Ordering and organizing supplies for laboratories
- Working with Clinical Skills Lab staff and others to collect cadavers and animal tissues for labs
- Setting up for laboratories and cleaning up afterward. The technician may assist with moving animals to an educational setting for the laboratory as needed.
The technician may also assist the faculty member with animal handling as necessary.
- Contacting instructors to remind them of laboratory times; identifying changes to existing laboratories
- Working with course coordinators to identify animal needs for each course each year and will work the TAU leadership and Animal Caretakers to plan laboratory timing around animal availability and / or breeding & birth dates.
- Assisting with some laboratories, where they may keep attendance records, assist instructors in restraint, procedure demonstration, and instruction for technical tasks.
- Collecting animal use records from laboratories to assist with maintenance of herd holding protocols and IACUC compliance and updating the TAU leadership and / or Animal Caretakers on any animal concerns.
- On a limited basis, with priority for core DVM courses, assisting with the update of Moodle pages as directed.
- Working with course coordinators and TAU staff to orient new students to TAU each year.
- Working with the SimLab team to provide clinical skills experience on ruminant and other models.
- As needed, the technician will work with faculty to create and update instructional videos and to develop new instructional resources, including guides, videos, and new models.
- The technician is expected to be familiar with routine technical skills such as diagnostic sample collection, catheter placement, sterile preparation, basic physical examination skills, medication administration, and animal handling.

Qualifications Minimum Experience / Education
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Self-starter with an analytical and collaborative mind-set who can effectively work independently.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and spreadsheet management.
- Exemplary communication skills to work with faculty veterinarians, students, staff, outside companies, surplus suppliers and the academic affairs office.
- Desire to teach veterinary students in all aspects of clinical skills instruction.
- Familiarity with feedback techniques and communication tools to motivate learners.
- Familiarity and experience with routine technical skills used in animal patient treatment.
- Willingness to clearly communicate concerns to the faculty member and work towards resolution
- Previous experience working independently to identify problems and plan methods and techniques for solving technical or research problems.
- Enthusiasm for supervising students and assessing their work.
- Aility to handle one or more species (cattle, swine, poultry) with the willingness to learn animal handling forunfamiliar species.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 90 pounds with assistance
- Strong organization / coordination skills.
- Ability to write instructional sheets for clinical skills tasks following some basic training.
- Commitment to helping to provide the best CVM student experience possible.
Preferred Qualifications
- Training and / or experience to include veterinary clinical medicine and surgery, experience in a veterinary college, or familiarity with medical terminology.
- Previous technical, clinical, and large animal handling experience strongly preferred.
- Registered veterinary technician or equivalent training and experience.
- Prior instruction experience.
- Experience teaching or working with livestock
