BASIC FUNCTION :
Assists the ESL teacher or mainstream teacher by working with English language learners and providing a classroom environment that optimizes the ESL student's opportunity to access the NC Standard Course of Study

CONTACTS :

Internally- Provides small group instruction for ESL students that is planned by the mainstream or ESL teacher. Serves on school committees as assigned by principal.
Attends staff meetings. Externally-Attends school functions such as PTA in order to participate in staff / parent communication.
If bilingual, may serve as interpreter in parent conferences.

A. Education - Indicate the minimum amount needed and desirable
Completion of an Associates Degree or two years of higher education equivalent to 48 credit hours, or ability to pass a formal assessment (Workkey and 96 hours of in-service training), or completion of the NC DOL Apprenticeship Program, or completion of the NC ATA Professional Development Plan
Associates Degree with a concentration in Education

RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES / TASKS :

- Works with individual or small groups of ESL students to preteach or reinforce concepts introduced by the teacher
- Operates and cares for equipment and materials for instructional purposes
- Assists and / or supervises students during emergency drills, assemblies, and field trips
- Participates in staff development for professional growth
- Assists mainstream and ESL teacher in communicating orally or in writing with ESL parents
- Works cooperatively with other school-based staff members
- Addresses need of EC students in ESL classes appropriately.
