POSITION SUMMARY

The RSFWC Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for coordinating substance abuse services for American Indian / Alaska Native (AI / AN) clients.

  • The Substance Abuse Counselor identifies clients' substance abuse treatment needs; develops recommendations and treatment plans;
  • provides direct services including counseling and case management; collaborates with residential treatment providers and other referring agencies;

and facilitates linkages and referrals to resources in the community. The Substance Abuse Counselor is part of a multi-disciplinary team that provides comprehensive substance abuse and mental health treatment for AI / AN adolescents and adults.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct RSFWC departmental screening and intake for program eligibility
  • Conduct Global Appraisal of Individual Needs (GAIN-Q) assessment to identify clients' treatment planning needs
  • Develop and monitor treatment recommendations and individual case management plans for each client
  • Provide referrals and linkages to outside service providers, as needed
  • Provide individual substance abuse counseling
  • Collaborate with our partnering residential treatment providers
  • Develop and implement culturally appropriate substance abuse treatment plans and aftercare services
  • Facilitate culturally sensitive recovery groups, relapse prevention, aftercare, and substance abuse education workshops
  • Collaborate with other members of the RSFWC treatment team, including therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, public health nurses and employment counselors to provide comprehensive client care
  • Document all client encounters and SOAP notes into the Indian Health Service RPMS Behavioral Health System
  • Submit monthly reports and treatment logs to RSFWC Program Director
  • Maintain client charts and meet all documentation deadlines and procedures, as required by funding sources, accrediting agencies, contracts and UAII agency policy
  • Represent the agency at community events, meetings and during program reviews
  • Attend and participate in events to provide outreach to the community and to recruit potential clients
  • Attend all staff meetings and departmental and agency events as required by the Program Director
  • Arrange work schedule to benefit the Center program and clients with the approval of the Program Director
  • Keep Director well informed regarding activities, pending issues and potential problems
  • Adhere to agency policies and procedures and advances the goals of UAII in a manner that embodies the agency's philosophy

Education &

Experience :

  • Associate's (AA) degree
  • Minimum of two years' experience working in a drug and alcohol treatment setting

Certifications :

Certified as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor, State of California

Confidentiality :

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of client and personnel information adhering to HIPPA, professional codes of conduct, State of CA regulations, Privacy Act, and UAII policies and procedures
  • This position has access to sensitive information, and a breach in confidentiality will be grounds for disciplinary action up to and including immediate termination

Communication / Interpersonal Skills :

  • Demonstrable ability to communicate effectively and professionally both verbally and in writing
  • Proficient in English

Technology Skills :

Proficient in Microsoft applications, Word, Excel, Power Point

Other :

  • Available and willing to travel as needed
  • Available to work evening and weekend hours as needed
  • Responsible for maintaining a valid counseling certification and for ensuring timely completion of appropriate Continuing Education Units for renewal of certification

POSITION PREFERENCES

  • Experience working with the American Indian / Alaskan Native community
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations, community groups, and performance-based government contracts.
  • Knowledge of Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (Public Law 93-638)
  • Bachelor's degree in Health, Psychology, Social Work or Human Services
  • CADAAC Certification
  • Experience working with adolescents and / or adult co-occurring population
  • A minimum of two years continuous sobriety

There are prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, reading, as well as driving or riding in transport vehicles. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance, computer, and color vision. Talking and hearing are essential to communicate with staff and vendors.
