At Houston Methodist the Director Nursingposition is responsible for the 24 / 7 management of the assignednursing units and departments in terms of the quality of nursingcare delivered as well as for planning organizing leading andevaluating nursing services within area of specialty.

This positionprovides leadership and oversight in the accomplishment ofstrategic and operational objectives of the Department of Nursing.

The Director Nursing position provides strategic direction fornursing and business operations responsible for establishingstrategic and tactical plans for clinical services new programs andhuman resource allocation.

This position promotes a practiceenvironment that empowers nurses to provide effective compassionateefficient and knowledgeable nursing care.

The Director Nursingposition works in cooperation with the Medical Staff to ensureregulations and accreditation standards aremaintained.

The Director positionresponsibilities include overseeing the activities of thedepartment staff ensuring quality productivity functionalexcellence and efficiency to accomplish strategic and operationalobjectives.

In addition this position is accountable for employeeengagement adequate staffing levels budget development andcompliance staffing decisions such as hiring and terminatingemployment coaching and counseling employees on work relatedperformance and developing and implementing policies and proceduresto ensure a safe and effective work environment.

This position alsoensures training monitoring and operations initiatives areimplemented which secure compliance with ethical and legal businesspractices and accreditation / regulatory / governmentregulations.

PEOPLE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Directs developsand implements strategic and operational / high level projects andprocesses either through independent / highly autonomous work orthrough the facilitation of work teams to enable the effective andefficient completion ofobjectives.
  • Overseesmanagement of and ensures development for staff to meet overallobjectives in terms of quality service and cost effectiveness.

Provides timely guidance and feedback to help others strengthenspecific knowledge / skill areas needed to accomplish a task or solvea problem.

Directs management responsibilities of selectionscheduling supervision retention and evaluation ofemployees.

  • Meets orexceeds threshold goal for department turnover and / or systemmetrics on employee engagementindicators.
  • Providesleadership and communication to maintain a competent and engagedemployee group by conducting regular department meetings to reviewpolicies and procedures and operational matters rounding on allemployees completing performance appraisals conducting new hirefeedback sessions coaching / corrective counseling and providingrecognition / commendations to achieve desiredoutcomes.
  • Identifiesopportunities and takes action to build strategic relationshipsbetween ones area and other areas teams departments and units toachieve business goals.

Drives the promotion of teamwork within andbetween departments; participates and / or leads and facilitatesdepartment process improvements asneeded.

  • Implements changedemonstrating the ability to motivate employees and follow throughto ensure change in behavior has actuallyoccurred.
  • Motivates staffresearching and implementing strategies to keep employees engagedwhile maintaining compliance in terms of the quality of nursingcare delivered.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Overseesdepartment operations designated projects schedules and activitiesas needed to ensure that goals or objectives are accomplishedwithin the prescribed time frame.

Sets priorities and functionalstandards giving direction to staff as necessary to ensure the bestpossible delivery of service and high customer / patientsatisfaction.

Drivesdepartment service standards and activities to impact departmentand / or system score for patient / customerbased satisfaction throughrole modeling and fostering accountability.

Serves and activelyparticipates on various entity committees as a voice for thedepartment.

Maintains24hour / 7days a week accountability and authority for decisionsregarding patient care department operations and personnelmanagement for designatedunit(s).

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Ensuresa safe and effective working environment; monitors and / or revisesthe department safety plan and / or any specificaccreditation / regulatory required safety guidelines.

Responsiblefor staff maintenance of credentials and competencies peraccrediting / licensing agency and / or department guidelines asapplicable.

Employs aproactive approach in the optimization of safe outcomes andinformation systems by monitoring and improving the departmentworkflow and enhancing operations using peertopeer accountabilityand identifying solutions via collaboration.

Implements processimprovements utilizing tools such as lean principles. Role modelssituational awareness using teachable moments to improvesafety.

  • Responsible foremployee compliance to policies and procedures and performsassociated actions upon noncompliance (i.e. licensure / certificationcompliance focal point review requirements disaster plan inservicesinfluenza immunization wage and hour standard hours timelytermination submission timely timecard approvaletc.).
  • Remains current andproficient with regulatory requirements for the provision ofclinical services. Translates the requirements into operations toensure compliance.

Uses automated systems to access transmit andproduceinformation.

Coordinatesthe provision of comprehensive interprofessional patient care thatresults in clinical excellence optimal outcomes and maximum patientand familysatisfaction.

FINANCEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Developsand manages department operational and capital budgets approvalsand ongoing maintenance of the department(s) ensuring operation ina costeffective manner.

Proactively identifies and plans forcapital needs related to current equipment and future departmentprojects. Ensures staffing plans and schedules meet departmentneeds that reflect understanding of the importance ofcosteffectiveness.

  • Createsdepartment strategies to achieve financial target and staffingneeds through optimizing productivity supply / resource efficiencyminimizing incidental overtime and overtime percentage and otherareas according to departmentspecifications.
  • Projectsanticipated volume and demand for resources conducts cost analysisanalyzes and monitors budget reports and variances evaluating humanand material resource utilization and making necessary adjustments.

Analyzes and interprets complex data sets and reports (varianceanalysis financial / quality population specificreports).

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Identifies andimplements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes toimprove department entity or system operations by leading unitprojects and / or other department / systemdirected activities.

Proactively leads task forces and committees. May represent HM atassigned community or professional organizationmeetings.

Drives changeinitiatives maintaining effectiveness when experiencing majorchanges in work responsibilities or environment;

adjustseffectively to work within new work structures processesrequirements or cultures. Partners effectively with stakeholders asappropriate.

Ensures owncareer discussions occur with appropriate management. Completes andupdates My Development Plan (MDP) on an ongoing basis.

Conductsconversations with staff on their development andMDP.

EDUCATION

Bachelorsdegree and Masters degree one of which is nursing. If no currentMasters degree must obtain within two years; must be enrolled in adegree program at time oftransfer / hire

WORKEXPERIENCE

Three yearsexperience in a clinical setting two of those years with peoplemanagementexperience

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • RNRegistered Nurse Texas State Licensure and / or Compact StateLicensure within 90 days OR
  • RNTemp Registered NurseTemporary State Licensure within 90 days AND
  • Magnet ANCC RecognizedCertification Current incumbents have until December 31 2022 toattain an ANCCrecognized leadership certification within 1 year
