Why This Role Matters The On-Call Transportation Accessibility Specialist (will be called an On- Call Mobility Assessment Evaluator or MAE per the contract), will help ensure individuals with disabilities and older adults receive fair, accurate, and timely ADA paratransit eligibility determinations, while also supporting independence and appropriate use of fixed-route public transportation whenever possible. This role is intentionally designed to attract professionals from clinical disciplines and social-services or human-services backgrounds.
Whether your strengths lie in functional assessment, clinical observation, interviewing, advocacy, or structured decision-making, your work will directly shape equitable mobility outcomes. This position is located at WMATA Transit Accessibility Center at 300 7th St SW Washington, DC 20024. Who This Role Is For: * Clinical or Rehabilitation Professional (OT, PT, COTA, rehab, healthcare-adjacent) * You value objective functional assessment and defensible decision-making * You want to apply clinical judgment outside traditional care settings * You’re interested in systems-level impact and community accessibility * Social Services or Human Services Professional (Social services, disability services, case management, advocacy) * You thrive in people-centered, equity-driven work * You bring strong interviewing, listening, and observational skills * You are comfortable working within structured eligibility and regulatory frameworks What you’ll do: * Assess & Determine Transportation Access + Conduct in-person interviews and functional assessments with applicants + Review ADA paratransit applications, intake forms, and professional verification materials + Determine required functional assessments and evaluate results + Apply observations and assessment findings to ADA eligibility determinations + Assess applicants’ ability to independently use fixed-route public transportation + Make final eligibility determinations in compliance with ADA regulations and contract standards * Conduct Functional Assessments + Assessments may include: o Outdoor and indoor physical functional assessments o Cognitive and observational assessments (e.g., FACTS, MMSE) o Standardized tools administered according to established protocols * Document, Communicate & Defend Decisions + Produce timely, accurate written eligibility determinations within ADA-mandated timeframes + Maintain complete documentation supporting eligibility decisions and appeals + Enter and manage applicant data in Client systems (including Trapeze) + Participate in appeals processes by clearly articulating decision rationale + Provide additional written documentation to Clients upon request * Collaborate & Improve + Partner with MTM leadership and Client teams to identify process improvement opportunities + Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and Client collaboration sessions + Support community outreach and education initiatives as needed + Maintain HIPAA compliance and confidentiality at all times * Deliver High-Quality Human Service + Build rapport with applicants, caregivers, and support staff + Communicate respectfully, clearly, and compassionately with diverse populations + Maintain a positive, professional presence in all interactions What you’ll need: Experience, Education & Certifications: * Bachelor’s degree in Social Services, Rehabilitation, Healthcare, or a related field * 3+ years of professional experience working with individuals with disabilities and/or older adults * Related experience with regard to the functional assessment of individuals with disabilities along with experience working with individuals with disabilities * Experience documenting decisions within regulated or compliance-driven programs * Experience with ADA programs, eligibility determination, &/or public benefits Skills: * Strong interviewing, assessment, and observational skills * Knowledge of or ability to develop expertise in ADA complementary paratransit eligibility regulations * Ability to administer standardized evaluation tools consistently and accurately * Clear written communication for reports and eligibility determination letters * Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) * Strong organizational and multi-tasking abilities * Ability to work independently with limited supervision * High standards for confidentiality and data integrity * Additional language skills are a plus Even better if you have... * Knowledge of public transportation systems preferred * OT, PT, or COTA certification or licensure, preferred * 5+ years of post-licensure clinical experience, preferred * CPR and First Aid certification, preferred * Possess a continuously valid US driver’s license, preferred Min Salary: $25/hr Max Salary: $25/hr This information reflects the base salary pay range for this job based on current national market data.
