Overview : Universal Engineering Sciences (UES) has an opening in our Building Inspection Department. UES is a nationwide leader in Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials Testing and Inspection, Building Code Compliance, Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety, and Building Envelope.

Summary : A Plans Examiner reviews and evaluates building plans and specifications to ensure compliance with local building codes, zoning ordinances, and other relevant regulations.

Physical Demands & Work Environment :

  • Lifting and / or occasionally moving up to 35 lbs. can be expected, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Required to drive, stand, walk, use hands to type, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; talk and hear.

Body motions and movements include bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior / office work environment.
  • This is not a remote position. This role will be based on the selected job posting location.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Examine building plans, drawings, and specifications to ensure compliance with building codes, zoning laws, and other regulations
  • Identify discrepancies or violations and work with applicants to address and resolve them
  • Verify that plans accurately depict the intended construction and that they meet local standards
  • Prepare written reports outlining findings and recommendations for plan revisions
  • Communicate with architects, engineers, contractors, and property owners to discuss plan revisions and code compliance issues
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in building codes, regulations, and industry best practices
  • Proficiently operate a computer
  • Ability to function in a high-stress environment, be a strong multi-tasker, and be a team player
  • Answers client questions and assists them promptly
  • Knowledge and usage of proper format, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Regular attendance is required
  • Follows safety procedures
  • Other duties may be assigned

Required Qualifications :

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (in accordance with our Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle Record Check Criteria), may or may not be required to perform the duties and responsibilities of the role
  • Ability to pass a background check screening in accordance with Florida’s Jessica Lunsford Act (or equivalent state classification)
  • Strong knowledge of local building codes and regulations
  • State of Florida Building Plans Examiner license
  • Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software and plan review tools
  • Attention to detail and excellent analytical skills
  • Ability to read and write, including interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as writing routine reports and correspondence and speaking effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and customers / clients
  • Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Reasoning ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form

Preferred Qualifications :

  • A bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related field is preferred
  • State of Florida Building Inspector License
  • Previous experience in an A / E / C firm
