Job description

Residence Hall, Resident Assistant (RA)

(Select Only One Building)

  • Angwin Hall (women’s residence hall)
  • Calkins Hall (women’s residence hall)
  • Sierra Towers (men’s residence hall)
  • South Hall (must be in Honors program)
  • You will be contacted if you are selected for an interview.

Qualifications:

La Sierra University is a religiously qualified equal opportunity employer. Resident Assistants are recruited with specific attention to their membership in the Seventh-day Adventist church. In the event that a qualified Seventh-day Adventist is not available to fill a given position, non-Seventh-day Adventist applicants will be considered.

The role of Resident Assistant (RA) necessitates applicants meet the academic requirements of their program while effectively fulfilling the duties of the position. A strong academic record, indicated by a minimum grade point average of 2.5, is crucial as it reflects the applicant's ability to balance both aspects effectively. There are no specific restrictions regarding academic majors.

Preferably, candidates should have at least a Sophomore class standing (completed 44 units or more) and prior experience residing in a dormitory setting.

Given the mentoring aspect of the role, leadership qualities hold significant importance.

The following personal attributes are essential:

  • Integrity
  • Strong moral and spiritual values
  • Empathetic understanding and respect for others
  • Adaptability to life's challenges
  • Openness to change and flexibility
  • Ability to accommodate late-night duties
  • Effective stress management skills
  • Aptitude for collaborative teamwork
  • Adherence to Christian lifestyle in alignment with the University Student Handbook
  • Good standing in terms of university citizenship.

Maintaining good citizenship and adhering to student conduct policies are imperative. RAs placed on Citizenship Probation (CP) for any reason will be relieved of their position.

Job Description/Duties:

Since the role of the Resident Assistant is complex, no all-inclusive list of activities can be developed. Duties and everyday living seem to be synonymous. A Resident Assistant Handbook is provided that contains specific job description and informative materials. A general outline of the major responsibilities is as follows:

A general outline of the major responsibilities is as follows:

Student Advising and Mentoring: The Resident Assistant (RA) is entrusted with fostering individual relationships with residents to ensure they feel comfortable seeking assistance.

This involves being available during designated office hours and evenings, Monday through Thursday, as outlined in the Residence Hall Job Description, except during scheduled time off. Any adjustments to schedules require approval from the Dean.

Reporting and Documentation: RAs are responsible for communicating relevant information about students, maintaining housekeeping standards, and noting any unusual occurrences. Daily area tours are conducted to identify maintenance issues. RAs keep detailed logs of resident interactions/observations and leadership development activities for review with their Dean mentor(s).

Record Keeping: RAs manage room check-ins and check-outs, complete Room Condition Reports and obtaining signatures. These tasks occur during room changes or at the end of academic quarters. Additional duties may arise throughout the year.

Commitment and Attendance: RAs fulfill a range of duties including nightly room checks, front desk shifts, worship record-keeping, office hours, weekend duty, committee involvement, and attendance at all meetings called by Residence Hall Deans and Customer Service Representative Meetings.

Public Relations: RAs serve as ambassadors for the University, promoting its objectives and fostering understanding among residents. They also assist in interpreting campus policies and maintaining a conducive living environment for academic and spiritual growth.

Community Engagement: The RAs are expected to lead worship and social programming, facilitate hall meetings, and promote student involvement. They are encouraged to offer constructive suggestions for improving residence hall life.

Leadership Development: RAs are provided opportunities to develop leadership skills in administrative, academic, spiritual, social, wellness, or special project areas, in addition to their general responsibilities.

Other Responsibilities: RAs may be assigned various tasks such as desk duty, room cleaning, mail sorting during breaks, emergency assistance, trash removal, and conducting building tours as needed by the Dean.

Time Commitment:

Given the comprehensive scope of responsibilities, assigning a precise time commitment to the role is challenging. However, it is anticipated that RAs will dedicate approximately 15 hours per week, and up to 25 hours per week when scheduled to work the weekend. RAs will be scheduled to work 3-4 weekends per academic quarter and are expected to remain on campus and available throughout their weekend on duty. RAs are granted one night off duty per week, arranged between Monday and Thursday evenings, if they are scheduled to work the weekend. While on duty, RAs must remain available and present in the residence hall for the entire night. *The RA responsibilities extend until the Monday following graduation or as directed by the Dean.

Considering the significant time demands of the RA position, individuals are advised against taking on additional campus jobs or leadership roles. Any such commitments must receive prior approval from the Dean before acceptance.

Orientation/Training:

The RA job begins during the first weekend of September. Be prepared to move-in early for orientation, training, dorm preparations and Freshmen Ignite.

Wage Rate: The wage rate for this position ranges from $16.90 - $17.30 per hour.

Additionally, a housing scholarship is provided to support the leadership responsibilities associated with the role.
