Job description

Design Engineers ensure the stability and safety of our construction methods and temporary work structures. A design engineer collaborates with third party designers, our construction team, and other stakeholders to create designs which provide our team with a competitive advantage while ensuring safe construction methods and a project delivered timely and within budget.

We are seeking a Design Engineer working in the heavy, civil construction industry (Bridges, Locks and dams…i.e. no buildings) and ideally one who focuses on temporary works – things we build onsite as part of our construction methods for building the permanent structure. Examples include: falsework, engineered lifts, temporary custom scaffolds, special concrete forms, cofferdams, etc.

Design Engineer Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Creatively brainstorm with estimating and project teams on conceptual designs and potential value-engineering components
  • Evaluate loads and outside forces to verify structural soundness of new construction components, falsework, and existing structures for work methods to be employed
  • Design structures, such as bridge erection falsework, custom scaffolding, rigging apparatuses, andother access components
  • Create structural models by using computer-aided design software
  • Adhere to company Design and Inspection of Temporary Structures and Construction Devices
  • Complete field inspection of critical fabrications/falsework prior to loading.
  • Aid in conducting field investigations and measurements as necessary for design on connecting components
  • Follow construction safety guidelines
  • Choose appropriate materials based on structural specifications and material availability
  • Review plans and specifications for standards in constructability
  • Evaluate in-house work plans on design critical components
  • Coordinate projects with 3d party design professionals, managing their progress to stay on budget and on schedule
  • Prepare and allocate design proposal and budgets for use by project managers
  • Collaborate with project teams to develop engineered solutions for job needs
  • Quality control design review other in-house designs as required
  • Review and audit internal design processes to ensure standards are met and evolved as necessary

Design Engineer Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil / Structural engineering
  • Registered Professional Engineer
  • 5+ years of heavy civil engineering design experience
  • Highly proficient in Structural Analysis
  • Structural analysis software (RISA Suite preferred)
  • AutoCAD / Civil 3D experience for staging / modeling required, TEKLA a plus
  • Data-driven mindset with excellent mathematical skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Highly proficient in Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent innovative and collaborative capabilities
  • Willingness to Travel occasionally to project sites

Competitive Base Salary Depending on Experience:

  • 5-7 years of experience: $125k - $160k
  • 10-15 years of experience and management experience: $160k - $225k+ (top range is negotiable for "the LeBron of temp works")

Standard Company Benefits Include:

  • Annualy bonus of +20%
  • Health Insurance - 90% of employee, 70% of dependents
  • Dental and Vision Insurance add-on
  • 401k + 6% match
  • PTO + 7 Holidays

This person could be remote, so long as they understand they may need to come to the office or go to a jobsite periodically i.e. realistically <20% of their time. We would have them here in the office for onboarding and then the occasional visit to see us or something they have designed.
