The Research Safety division develops, maintains, and implements safety programs, policies, and procedures in accordance with federal, state and local laws, standards, and other applicable regulations and best practices. This position supports institutional safety committees by preparing reports and providing technical expertise. Responsibilities include partnering with assigned laboratories and departments to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, conducting laboratory inspections, implementing safety policies and procedures, and reviewing research activities involving hazardous materials such as infectious biological materials, rDNA, hazardous chemicals, toxic gases, and controlled substances. The safety specialist will work collaboratively with other OEHS divisions for delivery and implementation of all OEHS services. (i.e. equipment calibrations, certifications, and BFD Permitting preparation).
Required Skills
Bachelor's Degree in a related field and 1 year of experience. industrial hygiene experience, preferably in an academic research or health care setting required. Several years of direct EHS experience or professional safety related designation/credentials could substitute for a Bachelors Degree. Experience with Microsoft Office preferred. Valid Drivers License OSHA's 40 hour hazardous waste operations and emergency response certification or ability to obtain in initial 90 days Asbestos inspector credential or ability to obtain in initial 90 days This position serves as part of the EHS emergency response on-call team providing support 24/7 365 serving both Boston University and Boston Medical Center. EHS on-call staff must be able to respond to an incident location within one hour of notification and have a valid drivers license to use on-call response vehicle.
