Description:

Join the Team Behind Industry-Leading Utility Equipment

Sherman + Reilly is seeking an experienced and driven Mechanical Engineer III to join our Engineering team in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In this role, you will help design, develop, customize, and improve specialized equipment used by utility and infrastructure customers across North America.

This position offers the opportunity to work on highly engineered products in a collaborative manufacturing environment where innovation, problem solving, and hands-on engineering are valued. You’ll contribute to both new product development and sustaining engineering initiatives while partnering closely with Product Management, Manufacturing, Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain teams.

If you enjoy solving complex engineering challenges, seeing your designs move from concept to production, and working on large-scale industrial equipment, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and develop new products, custom equipment, and product enhancements
  • Create 3D models, engineering drawings, calculations, and technical documentation
  • Perform engineering analysis including FEA and simulation validation
  • Participate in prototype builds, testing, troubleshooting, and validation activities
  • Work directly with manufacturing and operations teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and cost-effective
  • Support product launches and transition designs into production
  • Conduct field visits and gather Voice of the Customer (VOC) feedback to support product development
  • Manage engineering project timelines, deliverables, and priorities
  • Provide sustaining engineering support for existing products and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to solve technical and operational challenges
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • 8+ years of engineering experience in heavy manufacturing, industrial equipment, mobile equipment, or related industries
  • Experience with product development and mechanical system design
  • Proven capability to design and troubleshoot complete hydraulic systems including schematics, valve logic, actuator sizing, pump selection, and overall system integration
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and engineering fundamentals
  • Experience with CAD software and engineering analysis tools
  • Strong communication, organizational, and project management skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience with FEA and simulation software
  • Knowledge of DFSS or structured product development methodologies
  • Experience with fabricated weldments, hydraulics, structural systems, or utility equipment

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This role includes a combination of office-based engineering work and hands-on involvement in manufacturing and testing environments.

Candidates should be comfortable:

  • Working in manufacturing and prototype environments
  • Standing for extended periods
  • Climbing on and off equipment during testing and troubleshooting
  • Using common hand tools when needed
  • Occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Working outdoors during field testing activities

  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Career growth and development opportunities
  • Collaborative team environment
  • Opportunity to work on highly engineered, specialized equipment
