Software Engineer

About Frontline Wildfire Defense

At Frontline Wildfire Defense , our mission is to protect homes, families, and communities from wildfire disasters. Our innovative wildfire defense system allows homeowners to track wildfires, receive critical alerts, and actively safeguard their properties using a remotely operated fire protection system. With multiple layers of redundancy, our system hydrates homes and surrounding areas to prevent ignition from flying embers—the #1 cause of structure loss during wildfires.

We are a fast-growing team that has already achieved significant milestones in protecting homes across Northern and Southern California. Our team includes experienced engineers, product designers, and industry experts, and we are looking for a Software Engineer to help drive the development of our technology platform.

About This Opportunity

As a Software Engineer , you will play a critical role in designing, building, and optimizing our real-time IoT and mobile application platform. This role is an exciting opportunity for a mid-to-senior level engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. You will work directly with the Head of Software and collaborate with a small, agile team to develop scalable and efficient solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Software Development & System Architecture

  • Design, develop, and maintain core backend functionalities for our wildfire defense system.
  • Build and optimize real-time data processing solutions to support IoT integrations.
  • Utilize Elixir as the primary backend language, with potential future firmware development using the Nerves platform.
  • Ensure best practices in software development, including automated testing, code reviews, and continuous integration.

Infrastructure & Deployment

  • Deploy and manage backend infrastructure in AWS-managed Kubernetes.
  • Maintain and optimize PostgreSQL databases.
  • Implement Infrastructure-as-Code and GitOps workflows to streamline deployments and increase development velocity.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Support

  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into functional solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance to improve system architecture, database management, and scalability.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance user experience and operational efficiency.
  • Qualifications

    Must-Have :

  • 3+ years of professional experience in backend software development.
  • Proficiency in Elixir or strong experience with similar backend languages (Node.js, Ruby, Python, PHP, etc.).
  • Understanding of software development life cycle (SDLC) and best practices.
  • Experience with cloud-based infrastructure (AWS, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Passionate about mission-driven work and collaborative team environments.
  • Nice-to-Have :

  • Experience working with IoT systems or real-time data applications.
  • Familiarity with Nerves for firmware development.
  • Previous experience in a startup environment.
  • Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range :   $100,000 to $160,000 DOE + Performance Bonuses
  • Company-provided cell phone and laptop computer
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • 401(k) plan
  • Flexible time off policy + 10 paid holidays per year
  • Remote First work environment, fostering work-life balance and autonomy
  • Join a passionate, mission-driven team making a real difference
  • And much more!
  • Join Our Mission!

If you're excited about building technology that protects homes and families from wildfire disasters, we want to hear from you! Apply today and become part of a fast-growing team with purpose and innovation at its core.

Diversity and inclusion are essential values at Frontline. We know we'll do our best and most impactful work when we feel we're represented, and we belong. We encourage talented people from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences to apply. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
