Deputy State Director

Overview

Salary Range $75,000.00 - $90,000.00 Salary/year Position Type Full Time

Description

MF Professional Services, Inc. ("MFPS") provides human resources, payroll, benefits administration, and operational support to mission-driven organizations. This position supports MFPS clients, including Mi Familia Vota ("MFV") and Mi Familia en Accin ("MFA").

MFV and MFA are national, Latino-led organizations dedicated to strengthening civic engagement, building political power, and advancing policies that support Latino communities. Their work includes voter registration, voter education, community organizing, advocacy, leadership development, and issue-based campaigns.

Position Summary

The California Deputy State Director supports the strategic, programmatic, operational, financial, and personnel management of MFV and MFA activities in California.

Working closely with the National Director of Campaigns and Programs and other organizational leaders, the Deputy State Director helps establish state strategy, manages staff and programs, supports field operations, develops partnerships, participates in fundraising, and monitors state budgets, grants, data, communications, and performance.

The ideal candidate brings substantial experience in field operations, campaigns, staff management, program development, fundraising, and data-driven decision-making.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help develop and implement a state strategy for building civic participation and political power within California's Latino communities.
  • Oversee assigned voter-registration, voter-education, community-organizing, leadership-development, issue-advocacy, direct voter-contact, and voter-mobilization programs.
  • Establish program goals, timelines, staffing plans, budgets, performance measures, and accountability systems.
  • Monitor California's political, electoral, demographic, policy, and community landscape.
  • Ensure field teams have the training, tools, technology, materials, data, and operational support needed to succeed.
  • Recruit, onboard, supervise, coach, evaluate, and retain qualified staff in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Foster a professional, inclusive, collaborative, culturally responsive, and accountable staff culture.
  • Oversee assigned field operations, including canvassing, voter registration, phone banking, text messaging, digital outreach, community events, and GOTV programs.
  • Monitor progress toward voter-contact, registration, organizing, and mobilization goals.
  • Collaborate with state and national leadership to develop and monitor the California budget.
  • Align program activities, staffing plans, grant deliverables, and operational commitments with approved financial resources.
  • Support grant proposals, funder reports, presentations, stewardship, and fundraising activities.
  • Develop compelling narratives describing California programs, outcomes, community impact, and funding needs.
  • Build relationships with community leaders, coalitions, funders, elected officials, media, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent MFV and MFA at approved meetings, events, coalitions, conferences, and decision-making tables.
  • Collaborate with the Data and Innovation Department to establish metrics, dashboards, reports, and accountability systems.
  • Ensure accurate data collection and reporting for digital organizing, voter registration, voter contact, GOTV, and other program activities.
  • Use data to guide strategy, solve problems, allocate resources, and evaluate success.
  • Collaborate with Communications on digital strategy, media, messaging, marketing, and calls to action.
  • Participate in media interviews and public-speaking opportunities when authorized.
  • Maintain appropriate distinctions between MFA's nonpartisan activities and MFV's legally permissible advocacy or electoral activities.
  • Work occasional evenings, weekends, extended hours, and campaign-style schedules.
  • Travel regularly throughout California.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience in program development, management, fundraising, community organizing, civic engagement, field operations, or candidate- or issue-based campaigns.
  • Experience managing direct voter-contact programs and field operations.
  • Experience supervising, training, coaching, and developing staff.
  • Experience developing and managing program or organizational budgets.
  • Experience supporting fundraising, grant proposals, funder relations, or grant reporting.
  • Experience building coalitions and representing an organization externally.
  • Strong understanding of the United States and California political, electoral, demographic, and policy landscapes.
  • Strong strategic-planning, program-management, fundraising, budgeting, and leadership skills.
  • Strong data-management and analytical abilities.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, VAN, EveryAction, and voter-mobilization platforms.
  • Excellent written, verbal, facilitation, presentation, and public-speaking skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple programs, projects, deadlines, and shifting priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail, judgment, accountability, and follow-through.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information.
  • Experience working with Latino communities or other historically underrepresented communities strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to travel regularly throughout California.

A specific degree is not required. Relevant education, training, campaign experience, community leadership, lived experience, and progressively responsible professional experience will be considered.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

With or without reasonable accommodation, the employee must be able to:

  • Work at a computer and operate standard office and field technology.
  • Facilitate virtual and in-person meetings, trainings, presentations, and public events.
  • Move throughout offices, meeting venues, event sites, field locations, and community settings.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods during field activities.
  • Lift or carry program and event materials weighing up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Travel by automobile or commercial transportation.

This position operates in office, remote, field, campaign, coalition, event, and community settings. Evening, weekend, extended, or irregular hours may be required during election cycles, voter-registration deadlines, major campaigns, community events, and rapid-response situations.
