Your Role

• Serve as a role model and resource for all staff, volunteers and customers regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it impacts the programs and services offered by the Department
• Supervise part-time staff, volunteers and contractors including orientation, scheduling, performance management, discipline, training and evaluation in order to provide quality services and programs.
• Work as a part of the "Modification Team" to develop, implement and evaluate individual modifications for patrons who have barriers / challenges participating successfully in general recreation programs
• Conduct / supervise program and facility assessments to assure that a barrier-free setting is established
• Assist staff in problem solving modification issues
• Provide training on inclusion, recreation programming, disabilities and policies & procedures, team building activities and unit operations for full and part time staff.
• Investigate, collect, compute and compile reports and other data for unit / departmental / City statistical reference and documentation purposes
• Participate on departmental / City committees and teams
• Develop collaborative relationships and assist other units when needed
• Provide quality customer service to all internal and external customers
• Assist in operation of the recreation center (opening, closing, giving tours / orientations, room set-up) when necessary
• Plans, coordinates, implements, supervises, and evaluates therapeutic recreation programs.
• Ability to supervise individuals who are off site; willingness to travel to other recreation centers / sites
• Team player, enthusiastic, and energetic with sharp critical thinking skills and abilities
• Ability to problem solve, think independently, and work in a team environment
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Microcomputer experience / skills with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
• Work with youth with disabilities in after school or camp settings
• Provide virtual programming
• Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less.

Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

Minimum Requirements :

MINIMUMS : Requires a Bachelors degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or a related field;

OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and / or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as recreation leader or recreation program supervisor.

Preferences :

In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position will have experience listed in the preferences below.

Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application.

• Bachelor Degree in Therapeutic Recreation / Special Education or related field
• Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
• Three (3) years' experience working with individuals with disabilities, with at least one (1) of those years in an inclusive environment
• Experience supervising subordinate staff and / or volunteers
• Experience in planning, implementing and evaluation recreational activities (general recreation, aquatic programs, athletics, afterschool programs and summer camps)
• Experience and knowledge of leisure education, evidenced based practice, assessment and evaluation techniques.
• Experience with staff development and training.
