Position Summary : BioGenerator Ventures, the investment and entrepreneur support division of BioSTL, is seeking a Senior Managing Director to play a crucial role in driving the growth and impact of St.

Louis' thriving innovation ecosystem. The Senior Managing Director will be responsible for leading BioGenerator Ventures, which includes managing its portfolio of over 70 active companies.

In this pivotal role, the Senior Managing Director will lead BioGenerator Ventures’ ongoing work to create and grow promising new companies in St.

Louis providing investment and comprehensive startup support, including access to the BioGenerator Labs. BioGenerator Ventures' current portfolio is aligned with St.

Louis' strengths, including therapeutics, diagnostics, medical devices, agtech, food / nutrition, and healthcare. In 2023, BioGenerator Ventures invested in 23 startup companies, and the portfolio has collectively raised over $2.

7B in capital from local, national, and global investors.

As part of the BioSTL Senior Leadership Team, the Senior Managing Director will help guide the long-term vision and strategic direction of BioSTL, which has been a driving force in developing St.

Louis' innovation ecosystem. The position will report to Donn Rubin, BioSTL Founding President and CEO and BioGenerator Ventures’ Chairman.

Job Responsibilities :

The Senior Managing Director, utilizing scientific, finance, and business experience, will actively participate in the following responsibilities :

  • Work with BioSTL Senior Leadership and BioGenerator Managing Directors to manage overall investing and startup support strategy, goals, and portfolio
  • Recruit, manage, and mentor the BioGenerator Ventures team
  • Create and build new St. Louis bioscience companies
  • Invest in both seed-stage and venture-backed bioscience companies
  • Support existing portfolio companies as they advance their products and business models
  • Build and support investment syndicates
  • Serve on portfolio company boards and help drive portfolio company strategy
  • Lead investment due diligence teams
  • Improve BioGenerator Ventures’ approaches through new strategies and problem-solving, potentially structuring and raising for-profit investment vehicles
  • Work with BioSTL leadership to fulfill the mission of BioSTL in building a world-class innovation economy
  • Support all aspects of BioSTL's charitable mission, including education, training, and coaching of talent, and promoting the commercialization of discoveries that improve human health and well-being
  • Support philanthropic fundraising for BioSTL to ensure continued resources to achieve its mission

Desired Qualifications / Experience :

  • MD or PhD in biosciences or related discipline, or other advanced degree with relevant experience
  • 20+ years of professional work experience
  • Venture capital investing experience
  • Founding and building startup technology companies
  • Raising venture capital and private equity, including investment syndicates
  • Conducting due diligence on investment and M&A opportunities
  • Working in startups and industry
  • Managing intellectual property portfolios and negotiating technology licenses
  • Creating and launching products and services
  • Managing scientific laboratory operations
  • Recruiting, training, managing, and developing diverse teams
  • Serving on company boards
  • Leveraging professional network for diligence and fundraising
  • Experience raising, structuring, and managing for-profit funds
