The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for an open (tenure / clinical track) faculty position in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences for a position in Veterinary Anesthesia and Pain Management

Position Overview

The appointee will join 4 ACVAA diplomates in the Anesthesiology and Pain Management Service, which is further comprised of 3 residents, 3 large animal technicians, and 11 small animal technicians.

The Anesthesiology and Pain Management Service is located within the comprehensive Veterinary Medical Center which includes state-of-the-art facilities with equipment such as endoscopy, laparoscopy, digital radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, 3 Tesla MRI, and 24-7 small and large animal emergency and critical care units.

Anesthesia monitoring and ancillary equipment are commensurate with that necessary to sustain a state-of-the-art clinical service

Performance Objectives

The successful candidate will be expected to share clinical responsibilities with 4 other ACVAA diplomates to provide clinical service in large and small animal veterinary anesthesia and pain management.

The successful candidate will contribute to clinical instruction of residents, interns, veterinary students, and is expected to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students of the various large and small animal clinical rotations.

Some telephone / e-mail consultation with referring veterinarians is expected.

Clinical teaching responsibilities will include small group and laboratory instruction of veterinary and graduate students / residents.

Participation in didactic teaching is also expected. In rotation with the other anesthesiologists, the successful candidate will share equally in providing emergency back-up consultation to the anesthesia residents and the technicians responsible for large and small animal primary anesthesia after hours / evening and weekend emergency duty.

Faculty members are expected to be involved in professional and community outreach, committee service, and curriculum development.

Participation in continuing education events and outreach activities for the public and private practitioners is expected.

Clinical-track candidates will be assigned up to 75% time in clinics, including clinical teaching of students and advanced training of interns and residents.

Sponsored research is not required for clinical track faculty, yet clinical research, publications, or other scholarly activities to advance clinical veterinary medicine are expected and encouraged.

Tenure-track candidates are given at least 50% off-clinic time to meet expectations for developing an extramurally funded research program in anesthesiology / pain management that includes collaboration with other scientists, advising of graduate student research, and publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Faculty are encouraged to develop collaborative endeavors with clinicians and scientists within the College and across the University.

Excellent collaborative opportunities are available in the Departments of Veterinary Biosciences and Veterinary Preventive Medicine within the College as well as other units across the University campus, including the comprehensive OSU Health Sciences Center, which is within walking distance of the College.

The College of Medicine () including the Department of Anesthesiology (); the Davis Heart-Lung Institute (); and the College of Pharmacy () are a just a few of the resources available to clinicians and research scientists interested in anesthesiology, pain management and related fields across the University.

Additionally, collaborative opportunities exist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital () and the Riverside Methodist Hospital ().

Education and Experience Requirements

DVM degree or equivalent, have completed an ACVAA or ECVAA residency program and be eligible to achieve board certification by the day of hire.

ACVAA or ECVAA board certification, graduate degree in Veterinary Anesthesia, Analgesia, Pharmacology, or related fields (MS or PhD)
