JOB SUMMARY The surface landman is responsible for managing all surface land aspects of a multi-rig drilling schedule. The incumbent negotiates with various stakeholders, such as owners of surface rights and government agencies, in order to secure rights-of-way, easements and surface related agreements.
The surface landman will develop and maintain relationships with surface owners and ensure all contractual obligations are met.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manages all surface land aspects of a multi-rig drilling schedule, including management of ongoing projects with the assistance of contracted field landmen
- Negotiates, writes, reviews and amends agreements, such as surface use and easements
- Works with legal department and coordinates efforts to settle surface damages resulting from drilling activities per agreements
- Reads, analyzes, and interprets real property legal agreements proficiently
- Develops and maintains excellent relationships with surface owners and counterparts at organizations in the industry
- Interacts regularly with government agencies, including University Lands, RRC, GLO, BLM, and NMLSO
- Serves as a liaison between the surface owner and regulatory agencies, by handling complaints and resolving surface owner related issues
- Provides land support to other departments by working with land administration and other support personnel to maintain accurate land records
- Keeps abreast of regulatory provisions, trending practices, land values in order to add value and maintain compliance with contractual requirements and obligations
- Other tasks as assigned
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Landman experience in Texas and New Mexico is preferred
- AAPL (RPL, CPL) certification preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary
- Strong interpersonal, negotiation and problem solving skills are necessary
- Must be a self-starter and possess the ability to work independently
- Must be detail oriented with the ability to multi-task with attention to accuracy
- Must be team player that possess the ability to adapt to a changing and fast paced work environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point)

Incumbents must be able to perform work which includes typing, sitting and standing. In the event that incumbent visits operations worksite, personal protection equipment, including head protection, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety shoes, and flame resistant clothing is required.
Safety rules including OSHA and DOT requirements are strictly enforced. Employees must be willing to travel and work extended hours on short notice.
