Science Communications Coordinator
Argonne National Laboratory is hiring a Science Communications Coordinator to support the lab’s Nuclear Technologies and National Security (NTNS) research area.
The Coordinator will join a small team that carries out external and internal communications to support the lab’s work in nuclear energy, national security, cyber security, energy storage, and high-resolution climate modeling.
The successful candidate will tell the stories of Argonne science through digital media, develop, and execute communications plans and products, support events for laboratory staff and the public, advise and support researchers as they seek to communicate their successes, and more.
The Coordinator is responsible for maintaining and curating digital content on the area’s webpages, WordPress sites, and intranet, ensuring content is fresh and relevant.
Additional communications products include e-newsletters, PowerPoint presentations, social media content, press releases and feature articles.
As a member of the lab’s Communications and Public Affairs division, the Science Communications Coordinator leverages the expertise of teams of graphic designers, video producers, photographers, media relations professionals, web and social media experts, and event coordinators to support the needs of the NTNS organization.
Primary Activities :
Reporting to the Head of Communications for Nuclear Technologies and National Security, support the implementation of the organization’s annual strategic communications plan.
Understand the work of the research area, its key priorities, objectives, sponsors, and partners. Build relationships with researchers and leaders within the area.
Write a variety of communications products such as web content, internal articles, social media posts and press releases.
Curate web and intranet content in collaboration with communications colleagues and content experts.
Update web content in a timely fashion using Drupal and WordPress.
Track and report key metrics that guide effective communications strategies.
Ensure that communications products align with overall laboratory messaging and branding.
Seek opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Argonne communications.
This is a full-time position, with standard office hours of Monday-Friday, 830am-5pm. On-site work in Lemont, IL is required two (2) days a week, as business demands.
Position Requirements
Bachelor's degree and four (4) or more years of experience, or equivalent delivering clear and concise communication to internal and external audiences, using traditional and digital means of delivery.
Writing skills in a variety of formats, in varying levels of formality, with strategic attention to tone.
Proficiency in translating complex information (such as scientific or technical content) for both basic and sophisticated audiences, focusing on the impact of the work in real-world terms.
Experience working with a website content management system; WordPress and Drupal experience is preferred.
Experience and skills in events management and using project management tools are preferred, as well.
