Department Summary

The UNT Center for Young Children is an early childhood education program within the College of Education at the University of North Texas dedicated to providing high-quality, research-based care and education for young children. Grounded in a commitment to honoring children as complex intellectual, social, and cultural beings, the Center fosters an inclusive learning environment that nurtures multicultural and multilingual practices while encouraging creativity, curiosity, and imagination.

The Center serves as a model for early childhood bilingual education, with a particular emphasis on sustaining and developing children’s emergent Spanish language practices as a pathway to bilingualism and biliteracy. Through developmentally responsive and culturally sustaining practices, the program supports children’s academic, social, emotional, and linguistic growth.

In addition to serving young children and families, the Center contributes to the professional preparation and ongoing development of teachers, counselors, and school leaders through partnerships with undergraduate and graduate programs in the College of Education. The Center also engages in innovative research that expands traditional understandings of child development and early childhood education, seeking to better understand the complexities of children’s experiences, learning, and identities in diverse educational settings.
