What We Want

The Senior IT Professional I, as a member of the Solutions Engineering team, part of IT Architecture and Engineering in the Technology Services organization will be expected to perform the following : under general direction, provides complex technical outcomes for multiple unit-level projects or operations utilizing multiple technical fields.

This position develops technical standards for implementing unit projects or operations.

Salary : Commensurate based on selected candidate's education and experience

Required Education and Experience :

Bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Five years of experience in multiple technology areas such as system administration, DevOps, collaborative software development, customer support, application support, project management, database administration, system reporting, access management, system security, and / or disaster recovery.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with a wide range of individual technical competency.

Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Preferred Education and Experience :

Bachelor's degree in engineering or technology related discipline.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

Systems Architecture and Design :

Ability to collaborate with various teams to architect and design solutions that are scalable, resilient, and secure.

Ability to develop and maintain architecture diagrams and documentation for various systems.

Advanced cross-disciplined IT skills.

Advanced analysis and troubleshooting / problem-solving skills.

Client relations skills, requirement assessment and analysis.

Project management methodology skills.

Understands context / interrelationships, and proficiency of ITIL.

Experience with Objectives and Key Results methodologies is highly desirable.

Development and Automation :

Programming experience with at least two of the following languages : Python, Ruby, Go, PowerShell, YAML, Helm or Bash.

Knowledge of and experience consuming and writing REST APIs.

Experience with at least one of the following automation technologies : Salt, Chef, Ansible, or Puppet.

Experience with Hashicorp Terraform, Packer, and Vault.

Infrastructure Management :

Knowledge of and experience working in one or more public clouds (AWS, GCP, Azure).

Knowledge of and experience consuming cloud web services (Azure, Microsoft Graph, and Google APIs in particular).

Knowledge of and experience working with Microsoft, Linux, and Mac operating systems Windows Server Windows Desktop, Mac OS X , Linux (CentOS, RHEL, Ubuntu).

General familiarity with network protocols and theory (TCP / IP, UDP, ICMP, MAC addresses, IP packets, DNS, OSI layers, and load balancing, etc.).

Knowledge of and experience working with at least one or more hypervisors Microsoft HyperV, VMware ESXi, Aria Suit, vSphere

Knowledge of and experience in at least 1 containerization technologies, and related platforms. Rancher, OpenShift, Tanzu, K8 Kubernetes

Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Active Directory or OpenLDAP.

Experience writing Infrastructure as Code (using Terraform or Pulumi)

Release Management :

Knowledge of and experience with CI / CD methodologies and platforms Git, GitHub, Azure DevOps .

Knowledge of and experience with DevOps methodologies.

Experience including actual pull requests with GitHub or Gitlab.

Knowledge of and experience with writing release and support documentation.

Data Collection and Analysis :

Knowledge of and experience using databases, particularly BigQuery, MySQL or MS-SQL.

Knowledge of and experience with data analysis.

Responsibilities :

Develop Infrastructure with Code and Automation : Works with other technical staff to develop infrastructure-as-code to facilitate deployment of virtualized and ephemeral infrastructure services in public cloud and in hybrid on-premises environments.

Maintains, develops, and documents procedural scripts to maintain infrastructure services. Develops code and systems to automate traditionally manual and repetitive processes.

Resolution of Technical Problems : Independently participates in projects and activities that conduct research into cloud compute problems and the formulation of recommended solutions for Cloud-centric customers.

Serves as a Cloud Computing resource for internal and external customers. Assists in strategic planning for cloud computing and related communications.

Gathers data and presents costing information for deployment into Cloud environments.

Innovation and Collaboration with Colleagues and Customers : Serves as a senior member of an information resource team responsible for setting technical direction in On Premises initiatives.

Works with technically focused campus colleagues to collaborate on infrastructure architecture strategies, methods, and solutions to emerging and persistent problems.

Participates in the Request for Discussion process as needed. Serves as a liaison to university groups or committees.

On-Premises Platform Management : Provides technical oversight designing and upholding a comprehensive infrastructure as code architectural framework.

Evaluating and recommending technologies for resource optimization, security, and compliance. Ensures high availability solutions and disaster recovery as part of the solution.

Managing integration, offering technical leadership, and maintaining robust documentation and change management processes.

This role is crucial in ensuring that on-premises infrastructure aligns with business goals and is compatible with hybrid cloud scenarios for optimized performance, security and orchestrated (code-based) delivery.

Security : Builds and configures software-based systems to implement IT security controls to meet TAMU, TAMU System, State, and Federal compliance requirements.

Using automation and Infrastructure as Code such as Ansible, Chef, and Terraform, writes code, and automates the deployment of security configurations that facilitates the protection of infrastructure and applications.

Using automation and Infrastructure as Code, writes code to ensure that security settings and compliance are maintained and monitored to prevent drift from intended stance or degradation of protective posture.

Support : Troubleshoots multi-part and highly interdependent cloud-based networks, computing systems, and software applications.

Provides Tier III support. Ensures documentation of changes to server support methods, procedures, and configuration. Coordinates the evaluation of new technologies.

Professional Development : Participates in training and professional development sessions. Performs other duties as assigned.
