POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title : Director of Development (full time, exempt position)

Reports to : Executive Director

Hours : Monday - Friday, 9 : 00AM - 5 : 00PM.

On occasion, there will be additional CCW events that may take place outside standard business hours.

Our office currently works a hybrid schedule, with staff working from home Mondays and Fridays and working from the office Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

This may change over time to accommodate business needs.

Children’s Chorus of Washington (CCW), now in its 28th season, nurtures artistic excellence and empowers young singers by celebrating our shared humanity and the value of every voice.

CCW is actively pursuing its vision of a chorus that represents the racial, cultural, and economic diversity of the Greater Washington community, making its outstanding program accessible to children and youth of all backgrounds.

Celebrated as the premier youth chorus in the nation’s capital, our 240+ singers range in age from 6 - 18. They regularly perform in DC’s most prestigious venues, and tour across the world.

JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

With the expansion of our operations to two rehearsal sites in Washington DC and corresponding increases in student numbers, CCW seeks a Director of Development to grow its fundraising capacity.

Overview :

The Director of Development will have responsibility for planning and implementing a comprehensive and strategic fundraising program which meets CCW’s goals for contributed income.

The Director of Development will, in partnership with the Executive Director, steward existing relationships, while also identifying and cultivating new supporters of CCW’s mission.

The ideal candidate has experience managing a contributed revenue budget between $500k - $1 million. The candidate is collaborative, with an understanding of the particular needs of a youth-serving arts organization experiencing rapid growth.

The candidate will have strong analytical, organizational, time management, and communications skills, experience with event planning and demonstrate creativity, enthusiasm, and commitment to CCW’s mission.

They should have strong knowledge of current philanthropic best practices and a proven track record in fundraising from diverse sources.

Principal Responsibilities :

Contributed Revenue 65%

  • Partnering with the Executive Director, oversee CCW’s fundraising efforts
  • Develop, schedule and maintain an annual written fundraising plan; develop long term contributed income strategies and identify and implement innovative tactics to achieve goals
  • Manage strategies to address existing, lapsed and new major and individual donors, government, foundation, and corporate donors
  • Develop print, digital, and video fundraising materials, including seasonal written appeals, as well as online and year-end campaigns
  • Leverage technology and social media to streamline fundraising activities
  • Identify a portfolio of prospects and current donors for the Executive Director, and develop step-by-step plans for the cultivation, outreach, and solicitation of these individuals
  • Develop and manage the annual development budget both for expenses and revenue
  • Manage the implementation plan for fundraising events, in partnership with the Executive Director, other staff and associated board committees.

This includes all event logistics, written material, vendor management, and efforts to secure sponsorships

In collaboration with the Executive Director, manage CCW’s Communications Consultant on the content and drafting of grant proposals and on the tone and content of appeal collateral;

manage grant fulfillment and reporting

  • Identify new and additional grant support opportunities, including those outside the arts, cultivate relationships with grant managers
  • Oversee and manage donor stewardship and gift acknowledgment process

Board and Staff Relations 20%

  • Work with the Executive Director and the Board to support development related committees
  • Liaise with the Development Committee chair
  • Function as staff lead for events involving the board or board committees
  • Serve on CCW’s senior leadership team alongside the Executive Director, Artistic Director and Chief Program Officer and attend board meetings in this capacity
  • Work with the Artistic Director and program departments to brainstorm and develop fundraising campaigns that support new initiatives
  • Work with the Executive Director and Operations Manager to create and maintain contributed revenue and expense budgets and complete project budgets and reports for grant funding organizations

Management and other duties as assigned 15%

This position does not presently involve supervisory responsibilities. As noted above, CCW is currently experiencing rapid growth with the result that, over the medium term and depending on organizational needs, the role may expand to include supervision of an associate-level staff member.

In such case, the Director of Development would be expected to undertake the following additional responsibilities within the negotiated salary :

  • Assist Executive Director with the recruitment of a Development Associate
  • Train and supervise the Development Associate
  • Work with Development Associate on developing annual department goals and plans
  • Provide feedback to Development Associate on their performance, including through a performance review process

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 3 5 years’ experience in a senior development role, ideally within an arts environment
  • Experience with CRM and fundraising software, Google Suite and Mailchimp
  • Collaborative approach
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience managing and mentoring associate-level staff

COMPENSATION :

The annual salary for this position is between $80,000 to $90,000, dependent on experience. CCW offers a competitive benefit package including a 401k match, health, vision, and dental insurance, generous PTO, and a flexible working schedule as needed.
