Job Purpose

A Cloud Database Engineer is responsible for managing, maintaining, and optimizing cloud-based database systems to ensure efficient and reliable data storage and retrieval.

This individual will work closely with application teams, infrastructure teams, and other stakeholders to design, implement, and manage scalable and secure database solutions in the cloud environment.

Some key responsibilities include :

Database Design and Implementation : Design, develop, and implement cloud-based database solutions in collaboration with development teams.

Create database schemas, tables, and indexes to support efficient data storage and retrieval.

Cloud Database Administration : Manage, monitor, and optimize cloud database instances to ensure high availability, performance, and data integrity.

Configure and maintain database backups, replication, and disaster recovery strategies.

Performance Tuning and Optimization : Identify and resolve database performance issues, including query optimization, index tuning, and resource utilization.

Monitor database performance metrics and implement improvements to optimize performance.

Data Security and Compliance : Implement and maintain appropriate security measures and access controls to protect sensitive data stored in the cloud database.

Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and industry best practices.

  • Database Monitoring and Troubleshooting : Monitor database activity and performance using database monitoring tools. Diagnose and resolve database-related issues and incidents, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure timely resolution.
  • Database Capacity Planning : Estimate future database storage and performance requirements based on data growth projections.

Plan and implement database capacity upgrades or scaling activities to accommodate evolving business needs.

Database Automation and Scripting : Develop and maintain database automation scripts, workflows, and configurations using scripting languages (e.

g., SQL, Python) and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Ansible). Implement DevOps practices for database deployment and management.

Collaboration and Communication : Collaborate with application teams, infrastructure teams, and stakeholders to understand database requirements, provide technical guidance, and ensure effective integration with other systems.

Communicate database-related updates, issues, and recommendations to relevant stakeholders.

Continuous Learning and Adaptation : Stay updated with the latest trends, tools, and best practices in cloud database technologies.

Continuously enhance technical skills and knowledge to adapt to evolving cloud environments and emerging database technologies.

Key Accountabilities

Setup / Configure Database Instances in the Cloud, Create Databases, Allocate resources such as Storage / Compute / Memory.

Implement strategies for HA, Failover DR and Replication. Perform deployments and run periodic backups. Establish access and authentication controls to secure data, setup encryption, masking as required.

Resolve platform related issues. Coordinate with vendors for product related issues, patches, bug fixes and perform upgrades.

Fine-tune database systems to enhance performance, scalability, and reliability - including monitoring and optimizing database query performance, indexing etc.

  • Meet with application teams to understand new / enhancement requirements and recommend high-level direction and approach to upcoming projects.
  • Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders on defining and implementing technology direction / roadmap within the cloud database technology space.
  • Assist in migrating on-premises databases to the cloud and integrating data from various sources into cloud-based systems.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills :

Applicant should be a US person.

Education and other qualifying skills

  • Bachelor’s Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology and / or equivalent industry experience.
  • 5 to 7 years of Database Administration experience.
  • 5 to 7 years of experience with any of the database management systems (Micorsoft SQL Server, DB2 LUW, Oracle, PostgreSQL etc.).
  • 3 to 5 years experience with NoSQL database systems (MongoDB, DynamoDB, Azure Cosmos DB, Neo4j, Neptune etc.).
  • 1 to 3 years experience working with large database / large scale projects. Have knowledge of cloud computing concepts, virtualization, and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) platforms.

Desirable :

3 to 5 years of experience with cloud-based database technologies (Amazon AWS S3, RDS, Amazon Redshift, Aurora etc.). Knowledge of Microsoft Azure SQL Database or Google Cloud SQL is plus.
