Description
Facilities Staff are responsible for the safe, professional, reliable, efficient, environmentally-sound, and cost-effective maintenance of the facilities on the Springfield College campus. The Carpenter is responsible for the general maintenance and repair of all buildings and properties.
Actual salaries will vary depending on multiple factors, including but not limited to degrees attained, experience, and other considerations permitted by law. Comprehensive compensation details, including any additional benefits, will be communicated upon finalization of the employment offer.
Responsibilities
Perform repairs, maintenance, new construction, renovations, remodels, improvements to support maintenance and condition the infrastructure of the College's buildings through skilled carpentry, cabinetry, and general construction.
Perform rough and finish carpentry work from beginning to end including framing of new construction and maintenance and repair of existing buildings and facilities.
Maintain campus buildings in optimum condition through maintenance, repair, and replacement.
Perform work on all building related systems, including finishes and painting of both large ands small areas.
Complete work orders and other work, projects, etc. as assigned by the supervisor.
Perform installation, demolition, repair, and maintenance work on: doors, windows, stairs, equipment, glass & glazing, plaster, sheetrock & taping, masonry, and all related areas.
Assist and provide recommendations for the planning of maintenance to improve the condition, appearance, and life expectancy of college buildings and structures
Properly set-up materials and equipment for the safe completion of work, while ensuring surrounding areas are properly protected prior to the commencement of any maintenance activity.
Assist the locksmith in maintaining all locks and door hardware on campus as well as management of key circulation among student, faculty, and staff.
Support the activities of the Maintenance Department, Facilities Management staff, other personnel, and contractors to ensure effective and efficient maintenance of campus facilities.
Perform other work and additional duties as assigned, including assisting other Facilities Management operations to complete assignments, perform seasonal tasks as needed, including but not limited to plowing, shoveling, clearing snow & ice from walks, stairs, pathways, and roads, and being available for emergencies and scheduled “off-hour” work as needed.
Qualifications
High School diploma or GED required with 7+ years of experience in building maintenance or construction operation in multi-trades (plaster, taping and sheetrock, multi-surface preparation, framing, and other building interior/exterior finishing, etc.).
Associate's, vocational or technical training preferred.
Valid driver's license.
A full motor vehicle/driving history report will be required as a part of the background check process.
Candidate’s driver history must be approved by the college's vehicle insurance carrier for operation of all police or college vehicles.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of carpentry and construction related skilled trades including but not limited to: carpentry, roofing, flooring, masonry, doors, cabinetry, and windows & hardware.
Service oriented background with commercial and residential experience.
Knowledge of specifications and reading blueprints.
Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, have initiative, be a self-starter, and strong attention to detail.
Demonstrate proper judgment in behavior, speech, and dress in a neat, clean, and appropriate professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
Ability to analyze situations and information, consider the risks and implications and implement a plan of action.
Ability to work as a team member & effectively with other personnel including faculty, contractors, students.
Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job including but not limited to walking around campus, climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolds or platforms, lifting/carrying heavy objects and working in confined spaces.

Ability to change work schedule as required by the workload, operational requirements and respond on an as needed basis.
This may require additional hours on short notice (hours including evening, nights, weekends and holidays) in field settings through normal and severe weather conditions.
Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to twenty (20) pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds, and occasionally lift over fifty (50+) pounds.
Ability to work off a lift, scaffolding, and/or ladder (over 30ft above the floor in some cases).
Ability to consistently stand/walk for up to 8hrs per day, frequent & repeated bending, twisting, reaching, kneeling.
This position requires occasional evening, holiday, or weekend work to support College events, respond to weather incidents (e.g. snow), as assigned to support Facility’s needs.
Conditions will vary from indoor, outdoor, and field environments in all weather conditions.
