Internship Overview
If you are looking for a summer internship that allows you to grow, apply your engineering knowledge, gain exposure to real-life engineering challenges, and build professional connections, HDL may be the right fit for you.
As a Traffic Intern, you will support projects that improve Anchorage's transportation system while gaining hands-on experience that makes a difference in the community. You will work directly with the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) on traffic projects by:
- Collecting traffic flow counts
- Performing traffic speed studies
- Installing traffic counting equipment within roadways and along trails
- Inputting traffic data into the MOA database
This position is intended for students pursuing a degree in Engineering or a related field.
Schedule
This internship operates on a Monday–Thursday schedule (10-hour days), providing three-day weekends all summer. The typical timeframe is May through mid- to late August, with flexible start and end dates to accommodate your college / university schedule.

What You'll Do:
- Collect peak hour traffic flow data
- Perform spot speed studies, trail counts, and manual intersection counts
- Process and enter data; edit data for accident analyses
- Install traffic counters within roadways and trail systems
- Perform other duties as needed
Qualifications & Physical Requirements:
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to use a 5-pound hammer to anchor equipment in pavement
- Ability to work safely within active roadways and near traffic
Work Environment
This position includes both office and fieldwork.
Office work requires sitting, standing, walking, and use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.
Fieldwork is frequently conducted along or near busy roadways or intersections and is performed outdoors, including in inclement weather. The position may require lifting up to 50 pounds to install traffic equipment.
