Job description

Position Summary

The Operations Engineering Manager leads the operations engineering function, providing technical leadership and oversight across system operations, SCADA, asset management, outage coordination, and power system analysis. This role supports real-time operations and field teams through system studies, fault and equipment performance analysis, regulatory and NERC compliance support, and development of technical procedures. The manager also oversees the synchronous condenser program, leads asset health and monitoring initiatives, coordinates closely with ERCOT and other stakeholders, and plays a key role in system reliability, emergency response, and the integration of new assets and projects.

Job Function

  • Lead and manage the operations engineering and SCADA teams.
  • Provide technical direction for outage studies, switching solutions, and coordination with ERCOT, project management, construction, and field operations.
  • Conduct power system studies to evaluate real-time and future operating conditions, contingencies, and system violations.
  • Develop and oversee the synchronous condenser engineering program, including real-time monitoring, performance analysis, and issue resolution.
  • Establish and manage asset integration, monitoring criteria, predictive maintenance, corrective actions, and performance trending programs.
  • Review relay event reports and coordinate corrective actions with protection and control and field operations teams.
  • Support protection system testing through settings reviews, logic evaluation, and test plan coordination.
  • Analyze equipment performance data including dissolved gas analysis, bushing health, and partial discharge monitoring.
  • Lead SCADA design integration, testing, and commissioning for new assets and projects.
  • Provide technical support during real-time system events and emergencies.
  • Assist with troubleshooting, equipment repair, replacement, and test analysis.
  • Deliver technical shift support related to system parameters, voltage analysis, alarms, and relay operations.
  • Lead the Network Operations Model Change Request (NOMCR) process with ERCOT.
  • Conduct design and operational reviews for new projects and asset additions.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports on equipment health and system performance.
  • Participate in industry and ERCOT-related working groups relevant to operations and system performance.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in transmission system operations engineering or substation/protection and control engineering.
  • Strong familiarity with ERCOT nodal protocols and operating guides.
  • Experience working within ERCOT system operations environments.

Qualifications

  • Experience with ERCOT System Operations Test Environment (SOTE).
  • Experience managing ERCOT Network Operations Model Change Requests (NOMCR).
  • Proficiency with Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSSE) or similar modeling tools.
  • Experience with SCADA systems, including OSI / AspenTech platforms.
  • Experience with Siemens T3000 distributed control systems.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in power systems strongly preferred.
  • Advanced understanding of power system operations, protection systems, synchronous machines, SCADA, and substation equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of NERC standards and industry codes including IEEE, NESC, and NFPA 70/70E.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ERCOT operational tools.
