About the Role :

As the Assistant Vice President (AVP), you will be a first-line manager responsible for shaping team objectives by nurturing, managing, and motivating a team of dedicated claims professionals. Your expertise in claims handling, leadership, and people management will be key to your success in this role. Key responsibilities include :

  • Leading a team of 5-7 Claims Professionals specializing in General Liability and Construction Defect claims.
  • Fostering team engagement and supporting professional development and growth.
  • Monitoring Key Performance Indicators and ensuring adherence to Hiscox USA Best Practices through regular reviews.
  • Engaging in Quality Assurance activities, including monthly reviews and calibrations.
  • Utilizing data-driven approaches to identify coaching opportunities and action plans.
  • Providing coverage analysis and coaching as needed.
  • Managing litigation strategies and overall exposure for cases within your team.
  • Identifying key trends and providing actionable insights to senior leaders.
  • Handling the allocation of new and re-opened claims, and addressing escalations due to severity.
  • Acting as the primary escalation point for customers and brokers.
  • Contributing to the Claims Leadership Team with opportunities for leadership presentations.
  • Assisting senior management with reserve recommendations and claims trend analysis.
  • Fostering collaboration within Claims, Underwriting, and Actuarial teams.
  • Participating actively in recruitment, onboarding, and performance management.
  • Adapting effectively to changes within the organization.

    Required Skills and Experience :

  • 10+ years of claims handling experience; a JD from an ABA-accredited law school can count as additional experience.
  • BA / BS degree required; JD is a plus.
  • 5+ years of experience in Commercial General Liability claims, including Bodily Injury, 3rd Party Property Damage, and Construction Defect.
  • 4+ years of experience in Claims management, with proven leadership and people management skills.
  • Expert understanding of claims handling practices, including coverage analysis and litigation management.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build rapport with stakeholders and foster strong relationships.
  • Experience partnering with internal and external stakeholders including Actuarial, Underwriting, Legal, and Risk Control.
  • Commitment to delivering excellent customer service.
  • Aptitude for managing claims load while effectively developing talent through hands-on training and support.
  • Must have or be able to obtain current insurance adjuster license(s) within 90 days of hire.
