About the Position
The Animal Evaluation and Enrichment Supervisor motivates and leads the Evaluation and Enrichment Team. You’ll be responsible for organizing, planning, assisting, and coordinating your team to provide optimal enrichment to our animals as well as providing timely behavioral evaluations on animals to determine adoptability. This role will oversee the daily staff responsible for in-kennel enrichment, playgroups, behavior evaluations and behavioral monitoring and ensure all tasks are complete to provide optimal animal care. This position requires the employee to be in the office and / or customer-facing for all hours worked.
NOTE : This position requires flexibility as you will be on a rotating weekly schedule at both of our following shelters :
East Valley

Must be flexible and able to work all shifts, which include starting as early as 5 am and finishing as late as 7 pm, working weekends, and holidays, determined by the needs of the Department

We Require
Three years or more of working in an animal shelter, animal rescue, or similar facility, directly handling dogs of a variety of sizes, temperaments, and dispositions
One year or more of experience in a supervisor role
Six months or more of experience performing dog-to-dog introductions or playgroups in a shelter-like environment
High school Diploma or GED
We Also Value
Animal behavior certifications such as CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, KPA-CTP, CTC or equivalent
Bachelor’s degree in Animal Welfare, Animal Behavior, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a closely related field
Experience leading or working directly with volunteers in an animal welfare setting
Job Contributions
Manage the daily schedules and tasks of assigned staff in-shelter to ensure benchmarks for animal care are met, leading to reduced length of stay, prompt resolution of behavior concerns, and high-quality care across all shelter locations
Provide in-person coaching to employees to correct performance deficiencies and implement corrective action and performance improvement procedures
Conduct routine in-shelter audits to ensure proper safety protocols, fear-free handling, and other behavioral processes are being followed
Administer and train staff on new policies, procedures, and behavioral programs being implemented
Review animal profiles in-shelter and recommend adoptability, or escalate cases for further assessment and alternative pathways
Ensure all animal behavioral records in the shelter are accurate, up to date, and reflect the correct outcome pathway for the animal, and address any inaccuracies or concerns that arise
Act as lead animal handler as needed for playgroups and dog-to-dog introductions, or other enrichment activities
Oversee the daily monitoring of in-kennel stress and review observations of dogs currently being monitored, submitting dogs for higher-level review when an immediate outlet may be needed
Provide assistance with handling animals, giving second opinions, training, or supporting the completion of daily tasks to the rest of the Animal Evaluation and Enrichment Team
Assist other divisions as needed as a skilled or secondary handler or with other needed duties while working closely with supervisors in other divisions to address any behavioral concerns in animals, help implement any process changes, and collaborate across divisions as needed
Working Conditions
Fast-paced animal shelter environment with exposure to extreme and varying temperatures, dogs and cats with unknown temperaments and behaviors, excessive noise, animal waste and fluids, deceased animals, cleaning chemicals, and zoonotic diseases
Must be able to lift up to 20-25 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly
Must possess, or have the ability to obtain by time of hire, a valid Arizona driver’s license, as you will be required to operate a vehicle when driving between shelter locations
A commitment to the use of positive reinforcement and fear-free training methods when engaging with dogs in our care
Fear Free Shelters certification or must be obtained within the first month of employment
