ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Information Technology Department supports the organization's technology needs and provides leadership for future solutions. Deschutes County IT manages systems and infrastructure, and provides stable, secure, and reliable technical support services to County staff and clients. The department includes 22 employees and partners with other technical staff throughout the County. The department is dedicated to enhancing security, efficiency, and productivity and provides everything from phone support to application integration.

ABOUT THE JOB:
Under close supervision by the Information Security Manager, the Intern - Cybersecurity Analyst supports Deschutes County's information security program by assisting with daily operational cybersecurity tasks, basic analysis, documentation, and user support activities. This position is intended to provide hands-on learning in public sector cybersecurity practices while contributing to the County's security monitoring, vulnerability management, awareness, and process improvement efforts.
This is a temporary, training-focused classification designed for students or early-career individuals exploring cybersecurity work in a local government environment. Work is structured, closely supervised, and scoped to low-to-moderate risk tasks, with escalations to assigned IT security staff for incidents, sensitive investigations, or complex technical decisions. Other duties are assigned as needed, consistent with an intern learning role.
Key Responsibilities:

Assists with security operations activities such as reviewing and triaging security alerts, helping document and track follow-up items, and escalating suspected incidents using established County procedures.

Assists with account and access reviews by compiling reports and comparing results to documented standards, under staff direction.

Supports vulnerability management by helping collect asset information, validating remediation status, and updating tracking logs in coordination with system owners.

Supports basic security hygiene activities such as checking endpoint protection status, assisting with phishing report handling workflows, and helping maintain inventories and evidence records for audits or internal reviews.

Contributes to security documentation by drafting or updating runbooks, standard operating procedures, and simple reference guides, and may help prepare materials for end-user security awareness campaigns.
What You Will Bring:
Knowledge of or experience with:

Demonstrating foundational understanding of cybersecurity concepts.

Following written procedures, handling routine tasks reliably, and communicating clearly with both technical staff and non-technical users.

Learning new tools such as ticketing systems, endpoint security, dashboards, spreadsheets, etc .
Skill in:

Attention to detail and strong judgment around confidentiality and handling of sensitive information commonly present in government environments.

Applying basic cybersecurity and IT support skills to help monitor, document, and follow up on routine security tasks using standard tools and procedures.

Communicating clearly and professionally with technical and non-technical staff while providing service-oriented support and maintaining organized work records.

Following County policies and security standards, including confidentiality requirements, and escalating issues appropriately under close supervision.

Compensation
$22.335 per hour. Outside of state or federally mandated benefits, there are no County benefits available to you with this position.
COMMITMENT:
One (1) year internship, up to 20 hours per week.
Minimum Qualifications
- Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the described work may be considered. A background in cybersecurity, IT, Service Desk support is helpful but not required.
Necessary Special Requirements
The employment offer will be contingent upon pre-employment screening for criminal history and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). These screenings must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.
- CJIS Certification - The certification process, including training and examination, will be conducted and paid for by Deschutes County following the candidate's hire.
Work is performed in a computer laboratory and office environment.
