Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a motivated Specialist Poison Information V for the New Jersey Poison Information & Education System (NJPIES), within the New Jersey Medical School.
The Specialist Poison Information V is responsible for the telephone management of the exposed patient, providing consultation on care, as well as triaging and providing drug and poison information.
The specialist also responds to calls on the New Jersey State AIDS / STD Hotline, providing information, resources and referrals.
Among the key duties of this position are the following :
- Demonstrates understanding of principles of toxicology when suggesting patient management or providing poison information.
- Specialists will acquire the skills to operate the telephone system, microcomputers and their peripherals and the backup systems.
- Obtains a complete history specific to each call.
- Properly assesses the severity of calls to the poison center and properly decides on follow up.
- Listens well and allows caller to define the problem to efficiently manage and coordinate care.
- Communicates at an appropriate level of understanding to the caller.
- Functions as a member of the team, assisting in the prompt answering of calls.
- Provides appropriate and timely follow up to ensure accuracy and competency of patient management.
- Uses resources in an appropriate and efficient manner.
- Uses Medical Toxicologist consultants appropriately.
- Recognizes limits of skills and knowledge (i.e., scope of practice) and therefore, seeks and accepts appropriate consultation, guidance and direction.

- Bachelor’s Degree in a health science discipline.
- Candidates must be a Nurse, Pharmacist, or Physician.
- Related experience and / or education may be substituted for the requirements on a year-for-year basis.
Certifications / Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have a detailed knowledge of pharmaceuticals and toxicological principles and have demonstrated knowledge of HIV / AIDS / STD’s, their symptoms, treatments and testing.
- Must have excellent oral, written and keyboard skills and have technological Know-How to operate computers and telephone system.
- Successful completion of all orientation programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some clinical experience.
- Experience in Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine and Critical Care.
Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment Special Conditions
- The Specialist must be able to rotate all shifts (day, evening and overnight, weekends and holidays).
- Shifts may be up to 12.5 hrs in duration.
