Plans Examiner

We are seeking an experienced Plans Examiner to join the Building Inspection Department in the City of Newnan. Under the general direction of the Chief Building Official, the Plans Examiner reviews plans, specifications and designs submitted for new construction, remodeling and repair of existing structures for compliance with codes and standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review and interpret proposed building plans and specifications for compliance with all building codes.
  • Explain, interpret and provide guidance regarding codes with architects, engineers, contractors, developers, owners and other involved parties as necessary.
  • Perform on-site inspections of construction sites to ensure accuracy and consistency to approved plans and building code compliance.
  • Assist citizens with permit applications, assesses and collecting fees, issuing permits and resolving questions and complaints as needed.
  • Participate in meetings, educational seminars and functions relating to building codes.

Experience and Education

  • Associates degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management or related field preferred,
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in the construction industry, preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years professional experience in plans review, inspections, engineering or equivalent related education and experience.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain International Code Council certification in two areas of Plan Review within 24 months of employment.
  • Working knowledge of building construction and the ability to read and understand plans and architectural drawings.
  • Working knowledge of Permitting and Inspection Software for Building Departments.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Tools for spreadsheets, calculations and automation of large quantities of data.
