Recreation Specialist

The City of San Marino is hiring part-time Recreation Specialists to work in our Community Services Department. The Community Services Department is responsible for enriching the community through creative recreational programs, services and events, as well as the promotion of reading and learning activities through the Crowell Public Library.

General Description: Under general supervision, the Recreation Specialist assist in a wide variety of diverse recreation programs services and special events. Responsibilities include teaching, leading, and engaging participants, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times. In addition, this position also involves performing various clerical duties to support operations at various city facilities.

Distinguishing Characteristics: Current assignments include, but are not limited to early childhood education, youth programming, senior programming, special events, facilities, and park operations. Schedule may vary depending on the needs of the Recreation Division and the City. This position is "At-Will," which means the Recreation Specialist serves at the will of the City Manager and may be removed at any time without cause, notice, or right of appeal.

Essential Functions

• Provides customer service and information about division programs, services, activities, and events to the public.
• Sets up and takes down equipment for special events, classes, and programs.
• Assists groups using parks and facilities as requested; explains and enforces park and facility use policies, rules, and regulations.
• Provides staff support at special events and programs.
• Removes trash in and around parks and buildings; performs light cleaning and custodial duties of facility rooms, picnic areas, tables, floors, and playground equipment; reports facility maintenance needs to appropriate staff.
• Conducts indoor/outdoor games, sports, arts and crafts, and other activities related to recreational programming; ensures the safety of program participants.
• Observes and complies with City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
• Establishes and maintains a team approach with co-workers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Assists with the preparation of recreation activities, camps, programs, and events
• Monitors equipment and supply inventories and recommends procurement of items as needed.
• Performs general office duties, including basic cashiering, answering the telephone, greeting patrons, light typing, data entry, copying, and filing; prepares flyers, calendars, and newsletters.
• Maintains recreational facilities, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment and materials at the close of the workday and performing basic custodial duties; assists with opening, closing, and securing buildings for events, as directed.
• Maintains accurate logs and records of various activities, camps, and programs.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Recreation, leisure, and community programs, services, and activities.
• Care and proper use of recreational facilities, equipment, and supplies.
• Basic safety precautions and procedures related to park and recreation program area(s) and facilities.
• Proper cleaning methods and the safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, custodial tools, and equipment.
• Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility.
• City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
• Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
• The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
• General office and business administrative practices.
• Methods and techniques of implementing program activities.
• Age-appropriate program content.
• Principles and procedures of recordkeeping.
• Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

• Awareness of safety protocols and emergency procedures to ensure the well-being of all participants. This includes having basic first aid skills and knowing how to handle emergencies.
• Excellence in addressing participants' needs, providing excellent service, and ensuring a positive experience for everyone involved. This includes handling complaints and feedback professionally.
• Assist in designing engaging and enjoyable programs and activities. This includes being able to think outside the box and adapt activities to different interests and needs.
• Skills in building relationships with community members, understanding their interests and needs, and effectively promoting programs to ensure strong participation.
• Capability to assess the effectiveness of programs, gather feedback from participants, and use data to inform supervisors of improvements.
• Competence in handling administrative tasks such as record-keeping and reporting.

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to the education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to gain such knowledge and abilities would be:

• Must be at least 16 years of age. Candidates under 18 years of age and enrolled in high school must obtain and submit valid work permit prior to starting employment.
• Education: A high school diploma or GED equivalent or California Proficiency Certificate.
• Experience: Two (2) years of experience working in organized recreational programming. Supervisory experience is a plus. Both volunteer and work experience are considered.
• Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license. Possession of valid certifications in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and to be maintained throughout employment.
