General Background The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is a philanthropic organization that funds scholarships for students and raises general funds for 37 private historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

UNCF was founded in 1944 by William J.

Trent, Frederick D.

Patterson (then president of what became Tuskegee University), and Mary McLeod Bethune.

Guided for more than 80 years by the principle, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste,” UNCF has raised more than $6 billion in private support and helped more than 500,000 students, awarding more than $65 million in student scholarships each year.

UNCF is committed to closing the educational attainment gap by increasing postsecondary access for particularly low-income and first-generation students.

Graduates of UNCF member institutions and scholarship recipients have included many leaders in the fields of business, politics, health care, and the arts.

A few of the prominent UNCF alumni include Dr.

Martin Luther King Jr.; Alexis Herman, former U.S.

Secretary of Labor; movie director Spike Lee; actor Samuel L.

Jackson; and Dr.

David Satcher, a former U.S.

Surgeon General. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the work of the UNCF is supported by local offices throughout the North, the South, the Midwest, and the Far West of the United States.

The Area Development Director (ADD) serves as an ambassador for UNCF in each local office, responsible for engaging donors and leveraging critical relationships to ensure revenue goals are achieved.

The Area Development Director works remotely one day each week.

Key Responsibilities The ADD serves as the UNCF brand ambassador for the state of Indiana and is responsible for managing the local office in Indianapolis, supervising one or more professionals and/or administrative staff, and ensuring new sources of unrestricted income generated from corporations, individuals, local community partners, and foundations that support the 37 UNCF member institutions. Principal Duties Establish short and long-range fundraising goals and conduct comprehensive, cost-effective annual fundraising campaigns.

Plan and implement campaign strategies consistent with UNCF national action plans and policies.

Write fundraising correspondence, letters of acknowledgement and appeals, and maintain a regular schedule of in-person visits with corporate representatives, community leaders, foundations, and individual donors.

Cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with current and potential high net-worth donors.

Maintain a portfolio of qualified prospects with documented move management strategies.

Lead face-to-face solicitations and secure multi-year commitments.

Identify and recruit campaign leaders and leadership council members.

Establish and maintain close, direct contact with local corporations, government, community, church, and civic leaders to ensure volunteer leadership.

Prepare campaign, communication, and promotional materials in support of local fundraising efforts.

Supervise and coordinate staff activities related to records management in Raiser’s Edge database, maintaining current and accurate files on all donors and ensuring security and quality controls.

Interface with the accounting and finance department to fulfill information requests and maintain reporting accuracy.

Generate queries, reports, and other collection data as needed.

Conduct performance appraisals and recommend employment, termination and promotion, and ensure training and development of subordinates.

Candidate Qualifications At minimum, a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university. 7 or more years of experience in fundraising with demonstrated marketing or public relations skills.

Essential Knowledge/Skills Knowledge of major fundraising strategies and donor stewardship, with the ability to conduct capital campaigns and generate unrestricted gifts.

Highly skilled fundraiser comfortable and adept at cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding corporations, foundations, and high net-worth individuals.

Proficiency with Microsoft Suite and CRM database systems, e.g., Raiser’s Edge and DonorPerfect.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively.

Demonstrated initiative, highly organized with strong human relations and management skills.

A demonstrated knowledge of local/surrounding community donors is a significant benefit.

Ability to meet deadlines and manage time wisely, with minimal supervision.

Compensation and Benefits The salary range for the ADD in Indianapolis is $90,000 to $105,000.

UNCF offers medical, dental, and vision insurance, along with life insurance (basic and optional).

The organization contributes to a 403(b) retirement account, along with vacation, sick, and personal leave.

Statement of Non-Discrimination UNCF provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants or employment without regard to race, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, marital status or any characteristic protected by federal, state and local laws UNCF complies with applicable state and local laws governing non-discrimination in employment in every location in which in which the company has facilities.
