Job Summary :
Harris-Stowe State University is seeking a dedicated and student-focused Adjunct Instructor to teach a Seminar in Higher Education course designed for first-year students. This course plays a pivotal role in supporting students' successful transition into college life by fostering academic preparedness, personal development, and engagement with campus resources.
The instructor will guide student through essential topics such as navigating the University Bulletin, understanding campus resources, developing effective time management and student strategies, prioritizing responsibilities, and acclimating to the social and academic expectations of college.
Essential Functions :
- Teach 1-2 sections of the Seminar in Higher Education course, typically 1 credit hour each.
- Develop and deliver engaging, student-centered instruction aligned with the course objectives.
- Facilitate discussions and activities that promote student reflection, personal growth, and academic success.
- Introduce student to the university Bulletin and guide them in understanding academic policies, degree requirements, and course planning.
- Familiarize students with available campus resources (e.g., academic advising, tutoring, counseling, student organizations).
- Teach time management, study skills, and critical thinking strategies that support college-level learning.
- Encourage students to reflect on and balance academic, social, and personal priorities.
- Monitor student attendance, participation, and progress; provide timely and constructive feedback.
