ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI/ATTORNEY MENTOR PROGRAM

Career Development Office

Hiring Salary: $85,000-$100,000 annually, Commensurate with experience

THE ROLE and RESPONSIBILITIES

Depending on experience, this individual will be hired at either the Director or Associate Director level. The remainder of this job description uses the term Director as shorthand.

The Director of the Alumni/Attorney Mentor Program oversees and manages the Career Development Office (CDO) Alumni/Attorney Mentor Program. The Director promotes attorney engagement in the program and provides resources and support to both attorneys and students. The Director meets weekly with the Assistant Dean of CDO and will be involved in other CDO efforts and programming. The Director has minimal supervision in managing the programs and resources within this portfolio.

We have an array of existing programs that need to be implemented. But we're really looking for someone who can assess the efficacy of current programming, can articulate a vision for mentoring and alumni engagement that has a transformative effect on the student experience and student employment outcomes, and can creatively integrate that vision into our very collaborative CDO.

Typical duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Counsels and coaches students and alumni concerning career planning and job search strategies
  • Maintain strategic relationships with the existing alumni/attorney mentor pool. Recruit new attorney engagement and participation, on an ongoing basis.
  • Oversee and manages mock interview program(s), coordination with outside partners, and other opportunities for alumni mentoring and engagement.
  • Maintains and improves database(s) used to track and manage alumni engagement and programming.
  • Facilitate the relationships between attorney mentors, mock interviewers and students on an ad hoc basis as may be needed.
  • Design and deliver trainings/workshops/programs to teach self-initiated job search, interviewing, and professional relationship cultivation and networking skills.
  • Prepares, updates, and improves presentations to students, communication with prospective and confirmed participating alumni, resources to assist alumni and students and other resources as needed.
  • Prepare career-related handouts, materials, and website/intranet content.
  • Collaborate with other campus departments such as Advancement, Admissions, Communications, LEOP, Clinics, and Academic Centers.
  • Act as liaison with bar association groups with mentor programs to promote those programs on campus to students as may be requested.
  • Keep Advancement informed of alumni mentor participation and other volunteer efforts.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Career Development.

REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

The following education and experiences are required:

  • JD degree and at least three years of legal practice;
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing and delivering group presentations and materials;
  • Demonstrated strong project management experience; and
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills.

It is preferred, but not required, that applicants have the following additional experience:

  • Minimum one year of group and individual career counseling experience in a law school, another institution of higher education, or other legal environment;
  • Experience advising, mentoring, or counseling junior attorneys or law students
  • Knowledge of the legal employment market in California, including expanding and contracting practice and legal subject areas;
  • Experience working with diverse communities (including through counseling, outreach and programming); and
  • Coaching experience and certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the legal profession and related recruiting practices and hiring trends of legal employers;
  • Project management skills;
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, communication and counseling skills;
  • Ability to interact with all segments of the legal community and provide programming and resources for a diverse law school population;
  • Ability to formulate, implement, conduct, and facilitate career related workshops.
