Job description
CLP Engineering: Engineering Built on Utility Operations Experience CLPE is a high-growth electric utility solutions firm that combines the technical depth of a consultant with the hands-on insight of a utility operator, unlike any other firm. Through our sister company City Light & Power, Inc. (CLP), we support massive, 50-year utility privatization contracts nationwide, giving our team unmatched stability and a front-row seat to the operation of over 50 substations and extensive microgrid networks. Why CLPE? * End-to-End Exposure: At CLPE, we have no silos. Our engineers manage the full project lifecycle-from planning and design to field commissioning and operations. * Cutting-Edge Tech: CLPE stands out for its expertise in cutting-edge technology. Join us to take a lead role in advanced microgrid projects (500kW to 10MW) and smart grid implementation. * Balanced Impact: Enjoy a healthy mix of office-based design and field-based execution. * Purpose-Driven Culture: Quickly grow your career in an environment built on accountability, integrity, and collaboration in the mission to modernize the national grid. City Light & Power/CLP Engineering has been recognized by The Denver Post as one of the top workplaces for 2025 & 2026! Position Description: The Project Engineer supports and oversees the planning, design, and technical execution of electrical power system infrastructure upgrade projects, including substations, transmission and distribution systems, microgrids, grid modernization initiatives, and related control/SCADA systems. Working closely with Project Managers, senior engineers, multidisciplinary teams, external stakeholders, and clients, this role serves as a primary technical point of contact to develop engineering deliverables, coordinate technical activities, and ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with applicable industry standards, utility requirements, and project objectives. This position provides end-to-end project lifecycle support, including assessment, design, procurement support, construction support, and commissioning activities. Key Responsibilities: Engineering Design & Technical Delivery * Lead the engineering and design of substation, distribution, energy/microgrid, and SCADA projects, including study/planning, design development, procurement support, construction support, testing, and commissioning. * Prepare and review engineering deliverables such as single-line diagrams, schematics, equipment layouts, grounding designs, protection schemes, calculations, specifications, and bills of material. * Support and manage technical aspects of power system studies and technical evaluations, including load flow, short circuits, coordination, and arc flash analysis, to ensure sound engineering decisions. Project Execution & Construction Support * Support all phases of project execution from planning through commissioning, including scope development, schedule coordination, cost input, and tracking of engineering deliverables. * Manage RFIs, submittals, design changes, and field modifications, and provide engineering support during construction to resolve technical issues and clarify design intent. * Conduct site visits, field walkdowns, technical reviews, and support testing, start-up, and commissioning activities for substations, distribution, SCADA, automation, microgrid and related infrastructure. Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement * Coordinate closely with Project Managers, internal departments, and multidisciplinary teams to align engineering activities with project scope, budget, schedule, and client requirements. * Interface with clients, utilities, EPC firms, vendors, equipment manufacturers, and contractors to support design integration, procurement, and project execution. * Support procurement activities by preparing technical equipment specifications, reviewing vendor submittals and drawings, participating in bid evaluations, and assisting with equipment selection. Compliance, Quality & Continuous Improvement * Ensure designs and engineering deliverables comply with applicable utility requirements, client standards, and industry codes and standards, including IEEE, NEC, NESC, and other relevant regulations. * Participate in design reviews, QA/QC processes, technical audits, and continuous improvement efforts to maintain quality, reliability, and consistency across projects. * Promote a strong safety culture in design and execution by prioritizing safe, reliable, and maintainable infrastructure solutions throughout the project lifecycle. *Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Skills | Knowledge | Experience: * Bachelor of Science in Engineering field (required). * 5+ years of experience in electrical power system project engineering roles. * Experience with substation and/or distribution system design and upgrade projects. * Familiarity with power system analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, SKM, or similar). * Working knowledge of industry standards, codes, and design practices. * Strong technical writing, communication, and organizational skills. Work Authorization/Security Clearance: * You must be able to work in the US without sponsorship. * Military Base Access Security Clearance is required for this position. * A valid driver's license with a record that meets the CLP Fleet Policy. Travel: * Approximately 30% of travel required Compensation | Benefits: * We offer an excellent benefits package that includes medical insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, 401k with company contribution, paid time off and paid holidays. * Salary range: $115,000-$145,000/annual based on experience plus eligible to participate in Short Term Incentive Plan. * We reserve the right to pay more or less than the posted salary range based on factors unrelated to sex. Work Environment and Culture We're a family-owned company, and we build our culture the same way-intentionally. We know that people do their best work when they enjoy where they work. Our engineering team is collaborative, energetic, and genuinely enjoys solving problems together. The Employee First mentality shows up in meaningful ways: a hybrid work schedule, strong work-life balance, provided lunches, after-hours gatherings, Engineering Week celebrations, and even raffles. It's a culture where you're supported, appreciated, and encouraged to thrive. Growth and Career Development Our engineers consistently say the same thing: they grow faster here. At CLPE, you won't be boxed into a narrow role. Engineers work across all areas of design and execution, gaining broad exposure and deep expertise. One moment you may be developing concepts and solutions-soon after, troubleshooting and commissioning a system you helped design. This unique combination of operations and consulting creates an environment where engineers quickly become confident, capable experts in their field. When we say "full project lifecycle," we mean it-every step, every phase, every part. Learn more about CLP Engineering www.clp-engineering.com and our sister company www.clpinc.com.
