Overview

The Senior Environmental Health & Safety Specialist oversees s afety and environmental compliance efforts and relationships with applicable f ederal, s tate, and local agencies for assigned facilit y (s) . Implements Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) programs to protect employees and reduce risk . Partners with plant leadership to implement preventative measures to reduce the overall risk of injury and environmental concern s . Investigates EHS incidents to identif y root cause and recommend and implement corrective actions .

Responsibilities

Implements health and safety programs aligned with the organizational safety management system.

  • Implements ISO 14001 (where applicable) e nvironmental m anagement s ystem.
  • Coordinates and implements the application and training of safety rules, policies, and initiatives that help to create a safe workplace.
  • Maintains OSHA logs, EHS records, and reporting for internal and external use.
  • Manages plant-level environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives (hazardous waste, air emissions, water, obtaining and maintaining permits, etc.) both directly and in coordination with external consultants.
  • Manages s i te activities with regulatory agencies to verify compliance, resolve situations, and maintain a cooperative working relationship.
  • Escalates / reports potential violations and implements corrections as needed.
  • Conducts frequent safety and environmental audits and takes immediate corrective action if required .
  • Recommends and implements EHS related capital projects for supported facilities.
  • Investigates workplace safety and environmental incidents through root cause analysis and partners with the Operations team to implement corrective actions to correct problems and prevent future occurrences .
  • Manages workers' compensation for supported facilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, which may include leading projects of varying scale or scope.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, or related science disciplines, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Five years of EHS experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment .
  • K nowledge and understanding of applicable EHS regulations ensuring facility compliance with Federal government agencies ( i.e. OSHA and EPA ) , local agencies , and safety regulatory requirements.
  • K nowledge of manufacturing environment safety ( i.e. industrial hygiene, ergonomics, machinery guards, interlock systems, industrial vehicle training, PPE, etc. ).
  • Experience in implementing comprehensive safety, environmental, and sustainability projects.
  • Ability to investigate and define root cause , collect data, establish facts, and use sound judgment to draw valid conclusions.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills , computer skills, data analysis and reporting tools, and other applicable applications.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision to carry tasks / projects through to completion while meeting established deadlines.
