I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary :

The Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) is the intellectual and creative backbone of the university, a place where the arts, the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences come together to form a nexus of ideas and opportunity.

The Corcoran School of the Arts and Design bridges the George Washington University’s (GW) academically robust programs in the arts with Corcoran’s creative and inspired scholarship.

Part of GW’s Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, the school functions as an incubator for artists and practitioners in arts-related fields and serves to enrich students who are taking classes in other areas of the university.

As such, it provides a platform for engagement that bridges creative expression and practical application with the breadth and depth of the larger liberal arts education.

This Exhibitions and Programming Associate position facilitates and manages school programs, events, and exhibitions. The Associate’s primary responsibilities include :

  • Collaborate with faculty, students, and staff to produce student & faculty exhibitions, curriculum & class-driven projects & programming, and events such as performances, talks / lectures, exhibition openings, and the annual NEXT Festival.
  • Manage and support relationships with university-wide colleagues, community stakeholders, and visiting artists to produce programming and events.
  • Manage school programming events, including staffing, setup & breakdown, catering, security, decor, and scheduling.
  • Recruit, train, and manage contractors, students, staff, and docents.
  • Collaborate with the communications director on all publicity, promotion, and communication regarding events, exhibitions, and programming.
  • Maintain and implement the exhibition, inventory, and space usage in collaboration with staff, such as the critique space reservation and student exhibition calendars.
  • Manage annual budget for exhibitions, NEXT, and other events.
  • Support school-related systems and programs such as Design Lab and the Corcoran Central Workshop series and provide general support for central office administrative needs and senior staff joint ventures.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications :

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study.

Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses / Certifications / Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications :

Preferred Qualifications :

Degree in Curatorial studies, Community Arts, Art History, Museum Studies or related field or equivalent work experience.

A positive, professional attitude in all interactions with staff, faculty, students, artists, administration, contractors, vendors, donors, and the public.

Strong instinct for collaboration, event / public facing orientation, attention to detail, flexibility, and an ability to work with an interdisciplinary mindset.

Experience in the successful coordination of contemporary art exhibitions, performances, public art projects, community organizing, and related programming in an academic or museum setting.

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to handle multiple agendas and coordinate tasks with various departments within an institution.

Previous supervisory experience with artists, performers, art preparators, freelance contractors, and student volunteers.

Experience with contemporary arts event management and public presentations.

Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Suite, Mac OSX, web content, video conferencing, and social media management.

Typical Hiring Range

Commensurate with Experience.
