Job Description:

PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Program Coordinator manages daily operations pertaining to the Scripps College Community Engagement Center including oversight of Center events, student working groups, staffing, and community partners. The incumbent acts as a liaison between community partners, Scripps College, and the Center’s students and faculty. This position is responsible for community and partnership building and maintenance, working alongside the faculty academic director, and independently on community-based initiatives, on-site events, evaluation, archives, reports, as well as supervision of student researchers and employees. This position also involves daily maintenance and management of the Center’s on-campus space and the individuals and organizations that use it.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

This information is intended to be a descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The list of essential functions below does not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent in this position. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Assist Faculty Director in oversight of the Center’s community-based programs and partnerships. In particular, the Program Coordinator manages daily operations, staffing, events, community partnerships and oversight of the physical space of the community center and coordinates research fellowships, evaluation, reports and shared drives.
  • Maintain and enhance the Center’s community space and implement programming, including supporting community-based initiatives led by community partners, students, faculty and the Center which serve its many constituents. Work with Faculty Director and community partners in developing workshops on identified areas of interest for students and community, including but not limited to civic engagement, leadership development, organizing, skill development workshops, and community research and evaluation trainings.
  • Conduct targeted partnership building and maintenance with identified and future community partners. Explore developing partnerships that may emerge as capacity and interest exist. Conduct outreach at multiple levels with other local community members, youth, grassroots organizations, museums, and other universities, research/policy institutions, foundations and nonprofits.
  • Manage the physical condition and maintenance of the Center physical space and usage of the space with different community partners and student organizations. Manage the physical space of the Center including: review and approval of onsite activities, maintaining the space clean and orderly, updating office and community spaces, maintaining security protocols, aesthetics, restrictions, lease records and agreements, and submitting work orders as needed. Work with Scripps offices (such as facilities, IT, transportation) to ensure it is properly maintained as a Scripps facility.
  • Develop Center space into a vibrant campus/community center (increase aesthetic, programming, outreach, and usage). Work to increase the Center’s visibility as a viable community-based research institute in the region.
  • Provide oversight, assistance, and troubleshoot potential problem areas in managing the Center’s budget, finances and purchasing, ensuring report backs regularly to the faculty director.
  • Manage student research fellowship component, including oversight of hours, responsibilities, partner supervision, transportation, orientation, and program evaluation. Collaborate regularly with the Faculty Director on fellowship/partnership development and to identify and troubleshoot potential needs for programmatic, logistic, or administrative adjustments or conversations with students, faculty, or partners.
  • Manage administrative assistant and student employee efforts in maintaining an active and engaging presence that is in line with the Center’s goals, vision and mission in social media, including through the website, newsletter, Facebook, Instagram and other outlets.
  • Oversee and assist with program data management with administrative assistants, including: student research archives, IRB certificates and proposals, assessment data, program file access and archives in shared drive internally and with community partners, as well as preparing annual reports, evaluations and grant proposals and reports.
  • Assist the Faculty Director in the development and implementation of a community leadership strategy for Center initiatives and participate in planning for the program's future, including: developing faculty and student fellows, developing ongoing student workgroups, furthering an ongoing community archives research project and library, and landscaping the nature and extent of community engagement efforts undertaken by various actors at Scripps College.
  • Assist Faculty Director to serve as the Center representative at community partner events, partnership development opportunities, and collaborative programs.
  • Assist Faculty Director in expanding current partnerships with key Scripps academic departments, and academic support departments such as study abroad, career services, writing center, the library, and different institutes/programs across the 5-Cs.
  • Assist Faculty Director to develop, implement and assess opportunities for community members and students of The Claremont Colleges (including other Scripps classes) to engage and work alongside community organizing efforts in the Inland Empire region and Southern California more broadly.
  • Assist Faculty Director in providing support as needed for professors working with the Center’s programs.
  • Perform other essential tasks and duties specific to the position.
  • Active support for the College’s Principles of Community and Institutional Values in the performance of job duties.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:

This is a temporary status, part time (20 hours per week), benefits eligible, non-exempt position. This position is expected to end on or before June 30, 2027 and is contingent upon available funding.

The regular hours for this position will be 10 am to 3 pm., Monday through Thursday. Hours will vary due to the needs of the College or department. Occasional work during events, weekends, and holidays may be required.

Hourly rate range: $35.00-$38.00. The hourly rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
