Job description

GCJV CGRIP & Habitat Delivery Coordinator

This is a full-time position with American Bird Conservancy (ABC). American Bird Conservancy is a fast-growing, results-focused nonprofit seeking employees with an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to make a difference for birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. Inspired by the wonder of birds, ABC achieves lasting results for the bird species most in need while also benefiting human communities, biodiversity, and the planet's fragile climate.

The Gulf Coast Joint Venture (GCJV) Coastal Grassland Restoration Incentive Program (CGRIP) and Habitat Delivery Coordinator works as part of the GCJV Office that supports a multi-organizational partnership of state, federal, NGO, and private conservation organizations that have assumed responsibility for the pursuit of priority bird habitat conservation, linked to national and international bird conservation plans, within the GCJV region. The incumbent is expected to serve as a conservation delivery leader among a broad suite of conservation organizations and habitats that comprise the GCJV's socio-political and geographic landscape. The C-GRIP and Habitat Delivery Coordinator will work collaboratively with GCJV partners to develop and implement conservation projects and programs spanning public and private lands that contribute to GCJV bird habitat objectives for grasslands, estuarine and palustrine wetlands, forests, bird nesting islands, and other habitats. This position requires an understanding of the GCJV and ABC missions, and a knowledge of Joint Venture structure and function.

The GCJV Office, supervised by the GCJV Coordinator, is located within the USGS Wetland & Aquatic Research Center in Lafayette, Louisiana. The position will be administratively supervised by the Gulf Coastal Program Director within the Southeast Region of ABC, but the day to day activities and workplan will be handled by the Gulf Coast JV Coordinator. This is a full-time in-person position that requires some travel (up to 25%) within (mostly) and beyond the GCJV region.

Primary Duties:

  • Coordinate the GCJV's Coastal Grassland Restoration Incentive Program in Texas and Louisiana, including the following:
    • Seeking and maintaining funding support from a variety of non-federal sources
    • Maintaining updated proposal templates, application guidance, eligibility criteria, eligible conservation practices, and incentive payment rates
    • Incorporating program guidance as appropriate from the GCJV Board and relevant GCJV Initiative Teams of field-level habitat delivery partners who serve as potential Project Managers
    • Keeping the GCJV Board, relevant GCJV Initiative Teams, and other key partners informed about the program, including developing and distributing periodic RFPs
    • Managing proposal applications and ensuring eligibility
    • Maintaining effective and independent Review Committees, facilitating their reviews of proposals, and ensuring that applicants modify proposals as appropriate
    • Coordinating with administering NGOs to develop and execute agreements with landowners
    • Coordinating with Project Managers to verify project completion
    • Coordinating with administering NGOs to issue payments to landowners
    • Tracking accomplishments in tabular and geospatial formats
    • Tracking expenditures and available funding from multiple sources
    • Developing and delivering periodic written and verbally accompanied multi-media (i.e., powerpoint) reports to a variety of audiences
    • Promoting the program to landowners, landowner groups, and organizations who could serve as Project Managers
    • Advancing and improving the program for its effectiveness in addressing bird habitat needs and GCJV habitat objectives
  • Support the GCJV partnership in maintaining or expanding the health of existing habitat delivery programs that contribute to GCJV objectives and priorities, including the following:
    • Promoting strong linkages between programs and GCJV priorities
    • Exploring and pursuing new funding sources as appropriate for each program and in concert with program administrators
    • Promoting programs within organizations/agencies that influence land managers and to appropriate landowner and agricultural producer groups
  • Support the GCJV partnership in developing new habitat delivery programs that contribute to GCJV objectives and priorities, including the following:
    • Analyzing gaps among the suite of existing programs to identify un-met needs
    • Coordinating with partners of shared interests who might collaborate in development and operation of a new program
    • Drafting operational guidelines, identifying roles/responsibilities, (in concert with the GCJV Coordinator) seeking GCJV Board support, and seeking funding
  • Support GCJV partners in securing funding for habitat delivery projects that contribute to GCJV objectives and priorities, including the following:
    • Actively supporting the 6 GCJV Initiative Teams (based on GCJV sub-geographies) of field-level habitat delivery practitioners, who meet periodically in pursuit of habitat projects that address GCJV habitat priorities
    • Maintaining and sharing knowledge of the broad suite of habitat programs available within the GCJV geography to address bird habitat needs
    • Assisting GCJV partners with grant applications
  • Representing the GCJV in local, regional, national, and continental level meetings and forums where habitat delivery (and relationships to GCJV priorities) are strategized and pursued
