The J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte is seeking a Data Science Librarian to provide research support to students and faculty to help them achieve their academic and professional goals. The Research Data Librarian will serve as a major point of contact for students, faculty, and researchers across the University in finding, and utilizing data. This position will serve as liaison to the newly launched School of Data Science, as well as the College of Computing and Informatics and the Geography department. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with a fantastic team of subject librarians. They will design and teach instructional sessions, create online research guides, and assist with collection development for assigned academic programs. They will also be able to identify projects of interest and areas of growth to support the mission of a recently designated R1-status university.

Library faculty engage in service to the University, community, and profession. We provide access to and promote the discovery of information. We help our communities become proficient information users and lifelong learners. Library faculty serve current and future UNC Charlotte students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the Greater Charlotte and global community by sustaining the intellectual and creative life, and facilitating lifelong learning, discovery, and engagement.
Library faculty are expected to collaborate within the Library and beyond in the performance of professional duties that may include, but are not limited to : selecting, organizing, preserving, and facilitating access to materials; supporting teaching, learning, and research; providing outreach to the campus and community; and developing and maintaining digital and technological innovations.
Library faculty participate in scholarly research, creative endeavors, and professional activities to serve the Library, the University, and the information professions. Library faculty are strongly encouraged to pursue external funding for library-related initiatives.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Develop and provide instruction on data literacy and data visualization to assigned subject areas and the campus community
- Provide support for locating statistics, demographic, and census information for students, faculty, and researchers across the University
- Actively engage with assigned liaison areas
- Teach research instruction sessions for assigned subjects and academic programs.
- Develop appropriate instructional and informational aids for students, faculty, and community patrons.
- Manage and develop collections for assigned subjects. Expend budget allocations for acquisition of library materials according to established deadlines.
- Provide research and reference support for assigned subjects to students, faculty, and community patrons.
- Conduct collection evaluations for all proposed new courses and curriculum changes in assigned departments.
- Engage in professional service and scholarly contributions; participate in committees and faculty governance in the library and on campus.
- Communicate effectively and positively with individuals of varied backgrounds.
- Participate in the provision of in-person and virtual research services
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Experience / Education
The minimum academic credential required for applicants for faculty positions in Atkins Library is completion of a master’s degree in the field of library and information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association by time of application.
Graduation with master’s degree in a specialized area directly relevant to the position description may be an acceptable substitute in certain situations if approved by the Dean. A second masters in another discipline or an earned doctorate is highly desirable.
