At Houston Methodist the PharmacyAdministrative Specialist position is an advanced pharmacistpractitioner responsible for providing and coordinatingpharmaceutical care to the patients of Houston Methodist throughmedication use evaluations drug policy development and continuousquality management activities related to his / her specialty focusarea designed to improve operational efficiency and patient safety.

This position serves on one or more Medical Staff Hospital and / orDepartmental Committees or Subcommittees. The AdministrativeSpecialist also serves as a role model for the pharmaciststechnicians pharmacy students and residents in the integration ofclinical and dispensing services in the Department.

Other dutiesinclude planning and participating in staff development andcoordinating intradepartmental quality management and performanceimprovement initiatives related to the respective specialty areasof focus.

This position contributes to fulfilling the departmentsmission by collaborating to provide innovative personalized costeffective pharmaceutical care in a culture dedicated to quality andsafety.

PEOPLE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Promotes apositive work environment and leads the team to be dynamic and afocused work unit that actively helps one another to achieveoptimal department results.

Collaborates with other health careprofessionals as needed for problem resolution and / or achievementof identified patient specific goals.

Role models to team memberseffective communication skills assisting in their development ofsuch skills.

  • Developseducational materials and provides educational programs for thepharmacy staff and other hospital personnel. Serves as a preceptorfor students from the affiliated colleges of pharmacy and / orpharmacyresidents.
  • Communicatesregularly with the pharmacy management team regarding personnelissues quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliancematters.

Effectively implements protocols and objectives with teammembers to result in optimization of staff performance teamworkpatient safety and customerservice.

SERVICE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Manages dailyworkload fluctuations recommending changes as appropriate foroptimum patient care with respect to staffing assignments and workoutput.

Oversees activities of staff assigned in the area.Coordinates activities with staff to ensure accurate and timelydelivery of medications to patient care areas while functioning asshiftcoordinator.

  • Performsfunctions of a unit based pharmacist and exercises good judgment inpatient care decisions by providing operational and clinicalsupport which may include but is not limited to : order verificationand problem resolution processing orders / requests responding topharmacy consult requests automatic stop orders medicationhistories patient counseling and proactive drug therapy reviews andmonitoring.
  • Serves as aliaison for other departments and pharmacy to help support pharmacygoals and qualityinitiatives.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Coordinatesdepartmental reporting related to specialty focus area. Collectscollates monitors reviews and reports on statistical informationincluding inventory analysis quality management and productivitydata generated by the pharmacy informationsystem.
  • Works with otherdepartments as an expert in specialty focus area to improve patientcare by participating in hospital and departmental qualitymanagement activities.

Identifies and helps to resolve operationaland clinical service issues related to technology. Oversees qualityassurance processes related to specialty focus area and appliesproven quality assurance methodology (i.

e. Six Sigma Lean etc.) asappropriate to improvementactivities.

Reviews andupdates policies and procedures assigned by the department directorand / or manager.

FINANCEESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Participates indeveloping the departments annual budget as it relates to thespecialty focus area. Assists the medical staff in selectingtherapy regimens which costeffectively meet individual patientneeds.
  • Identifies / implementscost savings and / or revenue opportunities for the hospital andshares their ideas with the pharmacy staff and management team.

Manages inventory to minimize waste and expired drugs in the workarea as well as uses ones resources effectively andefficiently.

Selfmotivatedto independently manage time effectively and prioritize tasks forself pharmacy technicians and other supportstaff.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists pharmacyadministration in planning developing implementing and monitoringnew pharmacy programs and services for the assigned work area anddepartment that address safety finance and operational initiativesincluding the monitoring of establishedservices.
  • Contributesregularly to intradepartmental interdepartmental activities andprofessional publications. Gives presentations at local state andnational meetings.

Presents inservices for pharmacy medical nursingand nutrition staff members in area of specialty practice. Seeksopportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies witha focus on continual development as an AdministrativeSpecialist.

Leadstechnology assessment selection development planning andimplementation of automatedsystems.

EDUCATION

  • Graduateof education program approved by the credentialing body for therequired credential(s) indicated below in the CertificationsLicenses and Registrationssection
  • An advanced degree(i.e. masters degree or Pharm.D)preferred

WORKEXPERIENCE

Musthave one of the following :

Successfulcompletion of an ASHPaccredited postgraduate year one (PGY1) andyear two (PGY2) residency training programs or equivalentprofessional experience (i.

e. three additional years of pharmacyexperience per residency year; completion of a pharmacy fellowshipprogram with a focus in an applicable field may be consideredequivalent to a PGY2 residency)

Six years ofpharmacist experience applicable to the specific work setting (e.g.hospital specialty pharmacy); may consider HM employee with fiveyears of pharmacy experience and performance that demonstratesleadershipabilities

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • PHRMPharmacist State Licensure or eligible for Texas Pharmacist Licensewithin 90 days and
  • BLS Basic Life Support (AHA)within 90 days and
  • NRP Neonatal Resuscitationas determined by entity need (See manager for details and trackingcertification information) within 90 daysand
  • PPC Pharmacist Preceptor Cert StateLicensure within 90 days and
  • SCAT SterileCompounding and Aseptic Technique and horizontal and / or verticaluse Certification (*If verifying and / or preparing any sterileproduct See manager for details and tracking certificationinformation) within 90 days
